1950 MARTIN "IMPERIAL" - MEDIUM BORE #2 PROFESSIONAL Bb TRUMPET WITH A CUSTOM LIGHTLY BRUSHED (ANTIQUE)/ POLISHED FINISH IN EXCELLENT PLUS CONDITION
I have been playing horns for 60 years...collecting and restoring vintage trumpets and cornets, and building custom horns for 49. Over the decades I amassed a vast trumpet/ cornet collection. During the past few years I have thinned out the herd and continue to do so. All my horns are gig ready...cleaned, valves adjusted & aligned with new corks & felts when necessary. PLEASE LOOK AT THE OTHER HORNS I HAVE LISTED For your consideration, here is a 66 year old professional grade Martin Imperial that was the predecessor to the Committee, and has been the representative example of an Imperial in my collection. Prior to the introduction of the Committee Handcraft Model in 1938, the Imperial Handcraft was Martin's top-of-the-line flagship. After WWII the "Handcraft" moniker was replaced with "The Martin" Co., and it was during the forthcoming decade (1946 through 1955...serial number range 140,000 to 210,000) that Martin produced the finest and most sought after trumpets. During this decade the Imperial remained Martin's penultimate model. Years ago a very misinformed author wrote a thread on the various trumpet forums maintaining that after WWII the Imperial became nothing more than an intermediate level instrument. Unfortunately, the internet is a veritable cornucopia of misinformation that after time seems to become fact. Fact...the Imperial remained a top professional instrument until the 1960's when it was redesigned, and only then did it suffer in quality and performance. This 1950 Imperial is basically a Committee with a lighter one-piece bell (rather than a two-piece) with a tighter taper, thus making it less of a dark smokey Committee, and more of a slightly brighter and versatile trumpet able to handle any music style thrown its way. The only other differences between the two models are the heavier standard "S" main braces, valves caps, and standard water keys found on the Imperial. This Imperial has the preferred .452" #2 medium bore and a reversed leadpipe just like the Committee. Do not underestimate the ability of this horn to perform...I like it better than my Committees when playing anything other than dark, smokey jazz...it is an easy playing, medium bore powerhouse!
This Imperial is a fairly lightweight 2 lb. - 5.4 oz. (3 ounces lighter than a Committee) trumpet that will accommodate virtually any music style and acoustic venue. The trumpet has a clear and resonant tone that is easily controlled...its sound is big, bold, rather round, centered and focused. It is a free and open blowing horn with a rich, warm tone that produces a sophisticated edge when pushed, and loves to be piloted in the stratosphere. This horn has excellent intonation...the low register is not flat, and is very resonant. The 5th harmonic is great, and so is the upper register intonation. Slots are superb. Responsive and flexible, the Imperial makes a great jazz horn, but excels when playing commercial, legit, classical styles, and even performs well in studio sessions.Mechanically the trumpet is in awesome condition with lightning fast valves that are bright and shiny, without staining nor pitting, and exhibit near factory spec compression as the horn has seen very little use over the decades. Cosmetically, there are some scattered tiny pings on the valve block and bell stem, a small very shallow flat spot on the back bow that is more felt than seen, three tiny shallow dings on the leadpipe, and traces of very minor pitting on the 1st and 3rd valve casings. If you can't see any of these flaws in the hi-def photos, it's because they are that small. All slides are butter smooth. Over time, the original lacquer became severely deteriorated, so I stripped it and produced a lightly brushed (antique) finish on the horn body while the bell interior, slides, valve caps and key buttons remain highly polished. I then applied a coat of light gold tinted lacquer so as to provide a maintenance free finish.
Except for the aforementioned very minor blemishes, the trumpet is in superb condition. I tend to be overly critical and as accurate as possible when describing my horns, so that no one receives any "surprises". So, bid with confidence as I think you'll find my feedback speaks for itself. Finish - Custom brushed/ polished yellow brass and nickel silver with new light gold tinted lacquer.
