8 String Lap Steel! Made In USA!
This is really cool. You are looking at a 1949 National Grand Console Double Neck  8 String Lap Steel. This is a very cool more professional level lap steel. Very cool Indian "Totem Pole" motif on fretboard.  Back in the 1950's there was a Hawaiian Music Lap Steel Craze going on than that made these lap steels very popular. There were even door to door salesman selling lap steels along with music lessons at the local music shop.
Produced by the Valco company in Chicago (home of National, Supro, Airline and others), the Grand Console steel is extremely eye-catching and unique, with an Art Deco / Indian Totem Pole appeal and two eight string necks. The impressive, chrome covered pickups have great punch and a sinewy, glassy twang, pushing small tube amps into moderate overdrive with good cut and rich harmonic content. The transparent, lucite playing surfaces are in fantastic shape, with Art Deco multi-colored geometric patterns to mark the frets. The National stamped nickel covers are present on both sets of tuners, adding another elegant visual upgrade overlooked by other lap steel manufacturers.  Beneath the covers, the original Kluson Deluxe tuning machines are quite clean, protected for decades by the covers and showing little wear.  Between the necks, a clean and original "National" metal logo is present with red lettering and black silkscreened text for the controls that only shows light surface patina. All of the electronics work as they should, with original Stackpole pots and tone capacitor. The original knobs are present as well. The stock phono connector on the side pre-dates when National steels used a conventional 1/4" cable. The original cable is included.
Cosmetics: Excellent Condition. Keep in mind that this is a 67+ year old vintage Lap Steel. There are some light scratches and scuffs. Just normal wear and tear. The Case has some wear. There are scratches, scuffs, stains and tears in the covering. The original brown hardshell case with red plush interior is included. Frankly speaking, the case is falling apart, and the wood is loose along the back edge with the hinges, but the fact that the case even exists is what's really important, as many didn't survive at all! The latch on the left side of the case and the middle latch work fine. The latch on the far right does not work. The back hinge is very weak. Very Authentic. Dripping with "Mojo" It is used. Not perfect. Look at the pictures closely. They will tell the story.
