Description

. Antique FRENCH Artcase ERARD Ormolu Bronze Grand Piano  Made in  Paris 1876  for Australian Music Company Paling & Comp Melbourne.  We  may find many Erard Paris , Erard London. But this "ERARD MELBOURNE" is just too special.   140 years old , truly unique museum timepiece features F Linke  style exquisite ormolu bronze figurative ornaments all around the case. Stunning find for collectors.  There is large oil painting on top of the lid depicting Jean-Antoine Watteau's  "Festival of Love".  There are smaller oil paintings in beautiful ormolu frames at both sides of the piano. Both have summer love and musical theme in picnic  venue. The interior is neat and clean. It plays but need to be regulated and tuned since we didn't play this piano for last couple of years.  This is a stunning Erard boudoir grand piano with 2 pedals and 85 keys,  it is in size of  5 feet 5 inches. The ornaments are 24K gold gilded. The cabinet is exotic burl veneer.   We believe the case is decorated in Australia  by an artist  possibly after it's first sale by Paling & Comp Melbourne to a wealthy client or for a movie / theatre stage or musical festival.   Erard mechanism is all original.  Stunning focal piece for any high end neoclassical interior design.  Please read all information provided below , you may find important details.

The two great French makers of pianos who were also at the cutting edge of piano development during the nineteenth century were Ignace Pleyel and Sebastien Erard, the latter being responsible for the invention of the double escapement mechanism that became part of the modern form of piano action.  Erard has been acclaimed for pianos of the highest quality. Erard pianos were favored by Haydin, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Liszt, and Paderewski.  It is also uncommon to see older French pianos in Australia as the market was dominated initially by the English and then later in the nineteenth century by the German manufacturers. However, the Australian retail music firm of R.J Paling was an importer of French pianos and was given an award at the 1879 Sydney International Exhibition for importing pianos from France. This instrument is also significant as it not only features a circular metallic plaque inside acknowledging Erard's prize medal at the 1867 Paris International Exhibition but also includes a second circular metallic plaque written in French stating the instrument was manufactured for R.J Paling, Melbourne and bearing the serial number  dating the instrument to 1876 (year stamped 1876 at the back of the each pedals). This confirms the piano was made quite early in Paling's history which was established in the 1850s and became one of the longest running music retailers in Australia until their closure in the 1970s.
