Up for sale, a 1965 Epiphone Caballero model FT-30, complete with an upgraded rosewood bridge and new saddle. Crafted in Kalamazoo, Michigan under parent company Gibson, the Caballero is identical to the Gibson LG-0 in every way aside from the headstock shape and logo. Less common than its brother the LG-0, this Epiphone delivers classic vintage Gibson/Epiphone USA-made quality, with a warm, rich tone courtesy of the all mahogany construction. There's a certain boxy, midrange forward quality inherent in the Caballero, and this clear and punchy tone really sits well in the mix and has a distinct tonal character when compared to a dreadnought. Also quite articulate for fingerpicking, there's a surprising amount of top end snap and overall projection with this guitar as well. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Epiphone is strung with fresh 12-54 phosphor bronze strings and low action. The neck has a comfortable medium C profile with original frets that have lots of height and life left. The only notable fretwear is beneath the plain strings on frets 1-3, with lighter flattening of the crowns beneath the G and B until roughly fret 5, and virtually no wear further up the neck. The guitar plays cleanly in all positions with no buzzing or dead spots, and the neck is straight with a responsive truss rod. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard has pearl dot inlay, and the nut width is the more slender 1 9/16" which Gibson adopted in 1965 and used throughout the decade. On the headstock, the original open back Kluson tuning machines still turn smoothly and hold pitch well with straight shafts and clean white buttons. The original bolted-on plastic bridge has been removed from the instrument along with its corresponding saddle, and significantly upgraded with a hand carved rosewood bridge and new saddle. The new bridge is glued to the top in the same fashion as Gibson's more expensive acoustic offerings of the era, greatly increasing the tonal resonance and range of the instrument.Cosmetically, the guitar has two repaired cracks on the top on either side of the neck, and these cracks have been professionally addressed and cleated. The back has two cracks that mirror those on the face of the instrument which were repaired in the same fashion. The nitro lacquer finish is original and shows gorgeous finish checking across the body, with very fine horizontal checking across the headstock face. There are also some minor nicks and dings on the body as a whole from honest use over the decades. The original plastic "tortoise" pickguard is intact too, accenting the tortoise binding on the top.The tonal improvement of the upgraded bridge on this Caballero can't be overstated, and this guitar has been dialed in to perfection with ideal action. It's a structurally sound and very responsive vintage Epiphone which was made alongside the LG-0 in Gibson's Kalamazoo factory!
A vintage chipboard case is included.
