With the the G&L ASAT Classic S, versatility is the name of the game. It combines classic Tele® tones with the enhanced dynamics of the G&L MFD pickups, and the added flexibility of a middle pickup for seven total pickup combinations. The ASAT Classic S is the perfect go-to guitar for gigging musicians who need to cover lot of ground without compromise.

By adding the middle Stratocaster® -- but in this case S-500 -- pickup this type of guitar is capable of the classic Tele sound plus the funky middle and "out of phase" tones typically available only with the Strat. But since these are G&L's MFD pickups, you also get the enhanced dynamics, midrange content, and improved pedal performance at every position.So what's a "Modern U" neck? The G&L "Modern U" maple neck with rosewood fingerboard is a unique profile designed to fill out the depth of the hand down low but not be a burden up top. Compared to Modern Classic it's it's a little thicker across the entire length of the neck, but less so than the Classic C (their old #1 neck). We're not so sure we could pick out a "C" from a "U" blindfolded, but it fit our hand nicely, and provided more thumb and hand support up the neck than the Modern Classic. It's an interesting middle ground between the slimmer Modern Classic and the Classic C, and an under-appreciated profile option.Sound-wise, the G&L ASAT Classic neck pickup takes the best aspects of the orginal Tele® pickup: Warm bell-like tones, but with better attack and less compression and spongy feel. It's a more versatile pickup that the original design, and offers players everything from jazz tones, to traditional country, and full-throated lead tones that are similar to a P-90 pickup. Play around with the volume and tone controls and you'll find a wide array of possibilities.The S-500 middle pickup is less edgy then a traditional Strat, with a lot midrange bite that helps cut through the mix. The S-500 pickup design is a little darker and less glassy than a traditional Strat, and they respond well to distortion pedals, where their strong midrange focus produces crunchy rock tones that don't get overly brittle and edgy.The ASAT Classic bridge pickup assembly combines plenty of rich twangy goodness, but with more body, midrange, and less icy top end. It too drives pedals really well, with lots of output and harmonic complexity. Big rock tones are no problem with this guitar, and it's got humbucker-like output with superior clarity and detail. The Alder body provides plenty of punch and good low end response, and you'll be surprise at just how "heavy" this guitar can get. Because of the ample high end content, a little high end roll-off is sometimes a good a idea, and G&L's hand wired full-size potentiometers offer plenty of tonal control.We'd be remiss if we did not mention the available "Strat" tones of the neck+middle and middle+bridge. Often slightly anemic sounding, these positions carry much more pop and bite with the MFD pickups. We particularly like the neck+middle position, which has that funky out-of-phase tone, but with a lovely chime than can sound positively dreamy when played softly, or really clang when you dig into it. These are tones that often get squashed in a band setting, but not so with this guitar.Guitar players tend to get mired in tradition, but Leo Fender never stopped improving his designs. The G&L ASAT Classic S provides traditional vintage flavors but with the output, clarity and punch that makes it great for both recording and live performances. With its highly flexible morph of Tele/Strat sounds, and the ability to put out some serious crunch, the ASAT Classic S is the perfect go-to guitar for a wide variety of playing situations.
