The Godin 5th Avenue Kingpin II combines the style of old-world arch top guitars with modern playability, electronics, and great price. Constructed of all Canadian Cherry, the Kingpin is bright, lively and brings a fresh new sound that makes this more than just another jazz box. A consistent top seller, the Kingpin series is another home run from Godin.
This guitar was returned to us from a regular customer who decided their preference is regular acoustics. He took excellent care of it so it came back to us in mint condition looking virtually untouched. Hand crafted in Princeville, Quebec, the Kingpin is solidly built with an emphasis on both functionality and understated elegance and features:Canadian Cherry top back and sides24.8" scale maple neck with 16" radius Rosewood fingerboardTwo Godin P90 pickupsCognac Burst Finish with cream bindingAdjustable compensated TUSQ graphite bridgeFloating pickguardSchaller strap lock buttonsWeighs 5 poundsIncludes Deluxe Godin TRIC hardshell caseMade in Canada
The Cognac Burst model is not always easy to come by and it's easy to see why. The glowing sunburst shows off a very nice Cherry grain pattern and the grain matching on the back is especially attractive. Instead of the black pickguard used on other 5th Avenues, Godin uses a copper-ish tortoiseshell pickguard on the Cognac Burst model that really makes it look like a million dollars. The cherry body projects a lot of volume with full bass, bright snappy highs and plenty of sustain. The neck pickup is warm with lots of bottom end without being muffled. The neck + bridge combination screams rockabilly, and is really the sweet spot for the Kingpin. Much like a Gretsche, but with more punch and less anemic. The bridge pickup has plenty of bite, and like most P90's has a thick but edgy overdrive sound. And because the body is hollow not semi-hollow, just turn towards the amp for a little feedback on demand (Anyone remember Ted Nugent and his hollow body Gibson Byrdlands?). While obviously not a shred machine, the neck is great for chords and plays well up the neck too. While the factory installed .012 string set may feel a little "manly" to the average electric player, those looking for more rock guitar feel could easily throw on a set of .010's or .011's and still get plenty of volume. Overall this is bold and lively guitar that has capabilities beyond its conservative looks. While it's perfectly suited to Jazz or more mellow styles of music, the P90 pickups give it the punch and edge to be a great roots or rockabilly machine. Of all the guitars we sell, we get the most calls back from new 5th Avenue owners that say how blown away they are by this guitar.
