In 2010, Hofner produced only 58 of these 1958 reissues which were designed by Dieter Fisher. I was lucky enough to snag one and it turned out to not only look great, but sound great as well with that traditional Hofner tone, somewhat similar in timbre to my double bass. The sunburst finish is Hofner's "violin varnish" which allows the texture of the grain to show through, unlike lacquer. The bass came with numerous extras listed below as well as a unique hardshell case. Since I usually play fretless, this bass has only been played about 4 or 5 times in six years and only at home. Since I'm fanatical about guitar care, it's in exactly the same pristine like-new condition as when I first received it. Absolutely no scratches, dings, scuffs or any other problems. It has a straight neck with a rosewood fingerboard and no fret wear. The volume pots work fine with no crackle, while the tone controls have minimal if any effect, but since I always use the tone controls on the amp, this isn't a problem. I'm currently thinning my collection, and since I play mostly fretless, I've decided to part with this instrument.
The extras include: red shop apron, canvas gadget bag with logo, book, strap, decals, 2 print outs, Hofner pick, 2 buttons, neck strap button and screw, and case humidifier. I chose not to install the last two items since I didn't intend to use a strap and I was concerned about the in-case humidifier possibly scratching the bass when the case was closed, but these are included. The guitar stand is not included. Following is some information I pulled from the web. This Hofner reissue was inspired by the 1958 close pick-up space violin bass with the oval control panel. Featuring a three part vintage neck, two on a strip tuners, flat two piece maple back, two close spaced black 'Bar' pickups and the Hofner tailpiece which is authentically fitted with the Hofner logo. Top: Spruce Back and Sides: Flame Maple Neck: Flame Maple/Beech/Flame Maple Fingerboard Wood: Rosewood Scale: 30"  (76cm) Nut Width: 42mm Number Of Frets: 22 The 1958 reissue celebrates the retirement of Dieter Fisher, the master craftsman that made all of Paul McCartney's Basses. It comes with documentation and a Hofner shop smock. Some of the most striking features are the oval shaped control panel, Tortoise pick guard and "tweed" pattern case. Only 58 made.
