Description A Unusual full size Scottish violin / fiddle complete with the label shown , this reads S Fitzsimmond's Linthouse .Glasgow. P.Patent 18684 . with the number 6 ? may be his sixth one made. ? the label is old and original to the inside conditions very musty and dusty as is its box and soft outer canvas case. The case has an owners name in metal tape ELIZABETH DONALDSON. The violin has the following details , a fine nice 2 piece back with aged grain ripples that can be felt, the deck is of spruce with medium spaced grain , the neck and ribs all matching ,the scroll well shaped with a nice feel. The upper bout has a width of 6.5/8 " approx. the waist 4.1/2 " . the lower bout 8.1/4" approx. the ribs 1.1/4. the body length 14.1/8" or 358 mm . the overall length 23.1/4" . The Fiddle / violin has a nice feel to the neck with an ebony finger board. it was set up when found, it has an AUBERT bridge this seems set up high , the deck edges have some wear both sides on the deck upper bout and bow side of the lower bout deck edge. There appears a old crack or similar at the f hole along side the bass bar this is firm so may have been repaired or surface only. there is a small short crack at the right side of the tail piece. The waist bow side has been worn on the deck edge by the bow [ maybe some frantic Scottish fiddling ] the finish is a very warm orange a most beautiful colour, the only other issue is a small crack on the peg box side at the e string peg this appears glued and tight the peg working and holding fine see photos . the pegs all as shown. A nice old violin, given the patent number it may well date to 1932-3 . so approx 80 years old . It is unusual to find one made in Glasgow with a Scottish label , A fine item the weight 482 grams as shown . the case is old and well used the owner has laid more felt inside for protection and had added an outer cover as well , [ it must have been valued to her ]This fine item in as found condition any questions please ask, the close up photos show good detail. please take a look.
