Beestaara Cello - 20 stringed "Indian Cello" (from NouvelleLutherieLab)
Estimated price for orientation: 8 500 $
Category: Cellos
Class:
Description Brand: NouvelleLutherieLab Country/Region of Manufacture: France MPN: Does Not Apply
This is a totally unique custom-built cello by Alexandre Letellier of the Nouvelle Lutherie Lab, made in 2011. The instrument is designed in the spirit of fusing Western classical and Indian music, a cross between a cello and a sitar, sarangi or dilruba. He has also built several violins/violas in the same style, and some smaller cellos more recently, however this is the only cello similar in size to a 4/4 western cello, so the only one of it's type in existence There are 5 main playing strings are currently tuned C-G-D-A-E although could be tweaked to personal preference (e.g. adding a low bass string). There are 15 sympathetic strings which run right through the instrument, similar to a sitar or sarangi. To describe the sound the closest approximation would be something like a mix between a baroque cello and a sarangi or dilruba. There is a sample on my SoundCloud page (go to Google and type: "soundcloud martinkingstonsound" to find it) It's a joy to play as it is extremely resonant, a faint echo of the sympathetics ring on after the bow leaves the string. The strings "speak" very readily even with the lightest touch of the bow, and it is very "lively" with a lot of harmonics. The main body of the instrument was carved from a single piece of padauk wood which is very unusual and technically very difficult to achieve. There is a "blade" style pickup inside the cello running across the sympathetic strings which goes to a jack at the bottom of the instrument (for amplification or recording purposes if you want to hear mainly the sound of the sympathetics) If you visit the "NouvelleLutherieLab" Facebook page and look in the photos there is a gallery with several more photos showing every stage of the instrument being carved and built (you don't have to be a member of Facebook to view the gallery). Reason for sale I just own too many instruments and concentrating on a few. However sale is only speculative I will most likely be keeping the instrument in absence of a sensible offer. The cello has a large solid flight case which enables it to be shipped internationally without risk of damage. Please contact me with any further questions about this incredible instrument
