This is a vintage (serial number 462717) King model 1159 Double French Horn. This instrument is in good condition and plays very well. The valves move well with very good compression and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of the instrument, there are a few dings and pings and some scratching and pitting throughout the instrument, particularly inside the bell. All this is visible in the pictures, and none of it affects the playability of the horn. The engraving on the bell reads "KING/ KING MUSICAL/ INSTRUMENTS/ EASLAKE/ OHIO". This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop and repaired to full playability. This horn has had the old lacquer removed to improve its tone, as well as for aesthetics. Therefore this horn is finished in pure brass, and fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with a worn hardshell case and a mouthpiece in good condition.
How the horn plays: Very lively, big,and full sound. The tone is colorful. It is capable of being edgy and raw when desired but still with a full sound. The horn is very responsive and free-blowing. The Bb side timbre is brighter than the F side. The horn has an excellent dynamic range; capable of a fully, edgy fortissimo and a mellow, smooth pianissimo. The low and high registers speak well and easily. This horn is quite nice to play and has a very nice sound!
