G&L's made-in-USA Fallout combines their excellent P-90 pickup with their hot and spicy G&L AW4470B humbucker. Together they create a powerful blues and rock one-two punch. The unique Mustang/Duo-Sonic® inspired body shape is lightweight, comfortable and topped with a stunning Spalted Alder top that further separates this exotic guitar from the pack.
The USA-made G&L Fallout is packed with high quality features:Swamp Ash body with Spalted Alder Top, Honeyburst finish, 7.8 poundsG&L 'Classic C' neck profile - 1 5/8" nut width with 12" fingerboard radiusLight tint satin maple neck with Rosewood fingerboardG&L split and drilled tunersMedium jumbo frets (Jescar 57110)Cream/Black/Cream 3-ply pickguardG&L P-90 neck pickupG&L Saddle Lock BridgeBlack pickup coversG&L AW4470B humbucker bridge pickup3-way pickup switchVolume and tone controlsPull tone control to split bridge pickupPlek® laser guided fret finishingDelux tolex hardshell caseList price: $2431The old Mustang/Duo-Sonic® shape seems to be having a Renaissance of sorts, but G&L has been out there for years with the SC-2, and more recently the Fallout. But this is no budget Axe, and while the Spalted Alder top is surely a piece of eye-candy, testing revealed that it also brings some functionality to the table. This top has a tonal affect as well as a gorgeous look due to the "Spalt" which is actually a fungal infection in the tree. So while the Swamp Ash body provides clarity and a restrained midrange, the Spalted Alder adds a soft edge to the highs and accentuates the warmth of the low end. This was a happy surprise that was most noticeable when experimenting with the bridge pickup. While the G&L bridge pickup normally has fairly stout midrange emphasis and sharp attack, the Alder/Swamp ash combo both tempers the midrange and softens the high end just a touch. We really dig it.The neck on this Fallout is G&L's 'Classic C' profile. It's got a nice palm-filling taper and the same 12" radius and 1 5/8" nut width that has been standard on G&L's for years. G&L originally only offered their Slim C neck on the Fallout, but the other 1-5/8" profiles are also available. We're fans of the "#1" Classic C, and believe that little more beef in the neck provides a deeper tone. The Plek'd frets on this particular guitar are beautifully finished and the setup was spot-on right out of the shipping box. The pretty auburn streaks in the Rosewood fingerboard are a happy bonus, and nicely complement the Spalted Honey Burst finish.G&L's AP4285 P-90 is wound to around 6K ohms, which is on the low side for a P-90. The result is one of the cleanest, clearest P-90's that we've experienced, and it's a dynamite neck pickup. It has some of the characteristics of a good Tele® pickup but much better clarity, note separation and percussive bass response. Whether played clean or pumped through your favorite pedal, the G&L P-90 is a stellar blues pickup, with more meat than a Strat®, but still retaining exceptional note definition and a solid, percussive low end. It's a must have for your tone toolbox. The G&L AW4470 Alnico Humbucker (7000 turns of 44 gage wire, Alnico magnet) is voiced very similar to the Duncan JB pickup. With a resistance in the 16K range, it's got plenty of output, a strong midrange emphasis, and a tight, sharp attack (we suspect it's and Alnico 5 magnet). While clearly voiced for driving amps and pedals into a lather, it's got pretty good clarity when played clean, especially with this particular body wood combination. In fact when we first played this guitar, we wondered if they were using a different pickup. But then we hit the gain pedal and got that the tightly packed harmonic crunch that the AW4470 does so well. You do have the option to split the bridge pickup with the pull-tone knob, and you'll be treated to a crisper, brighter single coil tone that pairs nicely with the neck pickup. It's not often that something that would appear to be purely cosmetic also creates a sonic benefits. That appears to be the story with Spalted Alder, and it gives this Fallout both great looks, and a warm clear tone that can be both expressive and hard driving. The Fallout breaks out of the Strat/Les Paul rut at a very reasonable price, and you'll have something that really won't sound like all your other guitars. While maybe not enough twang factor here for country, it's hard to imagine a better package for blues, jam band, or classic rock We are an authorized G&L dealer and this is a new guitar with all tags, tools, paperwork and certificates.
