Up for sale, a 1964 Fender Jaguar in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. This rare, Pre-CBS custom color example is an absolute joy to play and has all of the early features of this model, including black bobbin pickups, a mint green nitrate pickguard, and clay dots on the fingerboard!A guitar capable of great versatility, the Jaguar is perhaps best known for its ability to out-twang any of Fender's other offerings, with shimmering, glassy top end that does cut through but can still feel warm and round. You can immediately feel the resonance of this instrument when you strike your first chord, and that dynamic, soulful quality really translates into the amplified signal. Of course, the Jaguar offers tonal options to both thicken up the sound and alternately make it even more sinewy and thin. The "strangle" toggle (located on the hexagonal plate next to the individual pickup on/off switches) gives the guitar a treble heavy snap, while the Rhythm Circuit (located on the guitar's lower horn) is a separate circuit for the neck pickup, engaging a darker tone cap. The Rhythm Circuit provides one of the best sounds on this guitar, with a thicker, wooly tone that still has plenty of clarity, while adding warmth to your clean signal as well as giving an overdriven tube amp or your favorite fuzz pedal that little bit of extra low end push to make single note lines stand out.  This Jag weighs in at 8lbs 12oz and has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, with 11-50 strings, solid intonation, and comfortable action. The maple neck has a medium C shaped profile that feels particularly sturdy and reliable, with just enough depth to feel substantial down at the nut and a bit more girth as you move up the neck. The Brazilian rosewood veneer fretboard has clay dot inlays and the original frets, which have been recently leveled and crowned, providing a very pleasant and consistent playing experience. The frets currently show virtually no wear and there's enough fret height left for another level/crown years down the line. The neck has the Jaguar's signature 24" scale, with a 7 1/4" fretboard radius and traditional Fender "B" nut width of 1 5/8". It's also worth noting that this particular Brazilian board has a very dark and tight grain, and as such, it does evoke some of the tonal properties of ebony, with a particularly clear and round note attack. The guitar has been fitted with a hand-carved bone nut that improves the overall resonance of the instrument substantially over the piece of plastic that would have been present when the guitar left the Fender factory. The original single line Kluson Deluxe tuning machines are intact on the headstock, turning smoothly and holding pitch as they should. The "Fender Jaguar" waterslide decal is in fantastic shape, with plenty of gold flake still present in the Fender name. On the heel of the neck, the original factory date stamp is extremely clean and bold, noting a March, 1964 date for the neck, as well as the Jaguar's model code ("1", given that in '64 the Jag was the newest and most expensive Fender model), and the B nut width. All of the electronics work as they should, and the pair of original black bobbin Jaguar pickups compliment each other well, with strong output and original winds on both pickups. In 1964 alone, Fender used yellow ink to individually date stamp their pickups and the pickups have May and June date stamps on the neck and bridge pickups respectively. Late in '64 Fender had already switched to the gray bobbin pickups, making it even more notable this this guitar left the factory with stock, handwound black bobbins! The original switches are present in the lead circuit, hexagonal control plate, and the Stackpole pots date to the 21st week of 1964. The pots in the Rhythm Circuit are original as well, while the switch that engages the circuit is a modern reissue. The routes on the body are untouched and original with stock shielding plates on both the body cavities and the underside of the pickguard. The original hardware is completely intact and in fantastic shape, with clean chrome plating on the stock bridge, mute, vibrato unit, control plates, and "L" series serial number neck plate. Even the original foam is still present on the mute, although it has hardened with age and would need to be replaced to be functional (oh, the woes of originality). The vibrato unit engages very smoothly and responds to the lightest touch, giving the player the ability to do subtle trills, surfy bends, and deeper dives with ease. The vibrato retains its original spring and arm, which locks in securely. The mint green nitrate pickguard provides the perfect contrast to the custom color Candy Apple Red finish, and this pickguard alone is extremely valuable and clean,  showing only a tiny bit of warping near the Rhythm Circuit, and complete with no cracks or modifications. The nitro lacquer Candy Apple Red finish is 100% original, aside from a few tiny marks of touchup around the edges of the body. The correct "paint stick" markings are present in the neck pocket, and the finish has its correct silver base coat peeking through in the various tiny nicks around the body contours. In terms of cosmetic wear, there are a few signs of honest use, but overall this example is one that will satisfy collectors and players alike. There's some buckle rash central to the back of the body, with scratches directly below the belly cut body contour, and wear to the bare alder below that. In a handful of small areas, a slightly darker, yet similar shade of metallic red was employed to touch up a few of the nicks around the body contours, as well as one nick on the top of the guitar. The originality of the finish has also been verified under a blacklight, and in this light the entire body, neck, and headstock have a uniform glow. Various other tiny cosmetic marks show through to the bare wood on the edges of the body and headstock. All signs of minor wear and use are represented in the photos, and more photos are available upon request!
