Paxman Academy PAX1 F/Bb Compensating Double Horn in Very Fine Condition.
Estimated price for orientation: 699 $
Category: French Horns
Class:
Description Type: Double Horn Finish: Amber Lacquered Brand: Paxman Model: Academy PAX1 Bell Material: Brass Skill Level: Intermediate
This is an excellent, high-quality compensator, made for and sold exclusively by Paxmans, London. These far outclass most student compensators, as their fine reputation indicates. This is really comfortable to hold and play. It produces a smooth, refined tone, as one would expect. This is a student-level half double, somewhat lighter than full doubles, and some Italian compensators, making them accessible for younger and smaller players. They also cost a sight less than professional-level horns.
There are a few light, cosmetic marks, mainly on the bell flare, but not anything of consequence. Only buying new will afford a better instrument than this one is. Used ones are not easily had, and not in this condition. Paxmans themselves sell these for a sight more than this, when they have one.
The mouthpiece is a Paxman 3B in excellent condition. I think it suits this horn very well. The valves move quietly and the slides slide easily. I have carried out a good service prior to listing, mainly just lubricating the moving parts, as there was nothing else to do. The horn blows well and has all the notes. I had no problems on any note with this mouthpiece in this horn. The internal bore of these is smaller than many, making it easier for smaller and younger players to fill it. This model is made with student players in mind. The horn stands in either F or Bb, at present it is set up to stand in Bb, but the adjustment is fairly easy, just one screw to move by the trigger valve rotor and the string to re-route, not a difficult job. There's lots online about stringing horns, including short films on YouTube from experts. For the asking price, this is a really good instrument. If you can afford this rather than an older Anborg or Danor, you'd be getting a much finer instrument, very well made and made to the exacting standards demanded by Paxmans, the premier horn shop in the UK. The case is good and protective, and a sight lighter than some cases. It is in very fine condition and has all the straps. It holds the horn safely and securely. Any trial prior to buying welcome at my home in Bridlington YO16 6YU, East Yorkshire. Feel free to bring an expert/teacher there's nothing to hide here. If collecting for free, I much prefer cash on collection, saving me PayPal fees.
UK shipping is by tracked Parcelforce, either 24 or 48. Compensation cover is for £100. They have never yet damaged one of my horns in transit. The Other Courier option is a professional courier company, such as UPS, offering full cover and a one-day signed-for and tracked delivery. Buyers can, of course, arrange for their own couriers to collect from me.
Any return would include refund of original postage. Refunds only if not as described in the detailed listing.
