Unbelievable find to put it mildly. Many gibson enthusiasts and collectors may or may not know of these gibson luthier employee built clocks. I have heard there were only 20 but I dont know that to be true or not. But what I can say with 100% confidence, is these are extremely rare. These were built by the gibson luthiers in the 50s from my understanding and not intended for commercial consumer sales. I am very fortunate to live about 15 minutes away from the original gibson company that was located in kalamazoo Michigan, now currently "Heritage Guitar Company". I have bought a few heritage guitars and spoken with few of the original surviving gibson employee's ("now owners of heritage guitar") quite a few times, so I called them up to ask about this clock and shed more insight directly from those who were there during their construction. They did remember these and said they each had thier own distinct touches and variances as they were hand made by different luthiers within gibson, and never really meant for a consumer production. These were allowed for employees made by employees for various reasons. That's the reason they rarely surface. We don't know how many exactly there were or how many are still surviving today, but I have only seen a couple pics on the entire web of another. I was shocked to come across this,, yet due to Gibson originally being from my neighboring town for way over 100 years it doesn't surprise me there's a few Surviving artifacts in this area. The craftsmanship of this clock is fabulous. The dots are real mother of pearl I believe or pearloid if it was even around back then, not sure which, and the headstock and neck have the ebony slab , and fretts and binding are basically as you would see an old hand crafted gibson guitar, file marks and all. The body is mahogany and a original gibson logo set into the lacquer of the headstock. No breaks or repairs in wood, the clock lense has a slight cack "pictured" and does NOT operate when plugged in. There is tons of aging and the lacquer finish has turned it's notorious orangeish Brown just like the old Gibson's did. There is orangeish Brown overspray here and there on the binding but when this was made new it would have been clear and unseen however Nitro cellulose ages in exactly this way. The aging on this piece is just absolutely stunning. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED !!!!! The clock is a fairly large size measuring as follows.
13 1/2 inches tall x 13 inches in width.
The base is 2 3/4 x 6 1/2 .
Clock face is 3 1/2 in diameter.
The body of the guitar is 2 34 thick. I added many up close photos and please use zoom as this piece of gibson history is very old and aged accordingly and highly detailed upon close inspection. There are scratches, slight dings, wood finish discoloring from age. This clock is estimated circa 70 years old plus, but do not know the exact age. This piece is for the very serious & true gibson enthusiast/collector. This isn't a plastic novelty advertising gimmick , these were built by the same guys making your most sought after 59's and jumbo's and are a true work of art, meant for presentation, as gifts, a piece of art representing thier craft and one of the most innovative and world renowned guitar companies in history. Here is a chance to own a authentic piece of gibson guitars private sector. As a guitarist myself I'm honored to own it and hope it goes into the most deserving collection and continued to be displayed proudly. Ask all questions and I'll try to answer as best I can. As many more photos as you like upon request. What you see in the photos is exactly what you will be receiving. Thank you for looking. Good luck!! NOTE!
