This auction is for an unmarked bassoon, probably made by George Catlin in Hartford, Conn. In the first 15 or so years of the 19th Century. In the 1982 and 1983 issues of the Journal of the American Musical Instrument Society, Robert E. Eliason wrote at length about the Hartford instrument-makers of that period, and illustrated his articles with some interesting photos of a 4-keyed bassoon by George Catlin , probably the first really historically important American instrument-maker. The instrument pictured is close to identical in most ways to the instrument now at auction, particularly the distinctive shape of the key pads and the shape of the bell section. (See photos.) NOTE: Included in this auction are the two AMIS Journal volumes cited above. Condition of this bassoon is good. There are no cracks visible in the wood, and the finish appears to be an older refinish. The keys are original, with one of them being bent. (Check the first few pictures for the bent, but not broken, key.) One of the brass ferrules is a replacement, as is the bocal. I am not a bassoonist, but acquired this instrument 50 or so years ago, when I was an avid collector of American wind instruments of the pre-Civil War period. It has been in climnate-controlled houses since 1965 or so. See the photos for condition, and please ask for detailed photos if you have questions. I will answer quickly. Good luck bidding.
