This is an original early 50's Gibson L5 tailpiece...super rare to find the early 50s variant in any condition!  This one is rock solid with normal handling wear and wear to the plating. Gold plate shows wear down to the brass on hinge bend area.  No breaks or repairs...this one is solid and will match well to a late 40s through 1950's L5 that has normal player wear.  The "varitone" device has been removed from the back...I see that as a plus!  That device only served to press on the top and damage the solid spruce. Meant to be a 'tone adjuster' the varitone device was a menace...now you won't have to worry about harming your restoration guitar, because this one is gone! The nickel plate on the badge is in great shape.  The badge has a scratch or factory 'doink' along one edge but not too noticeable.Overall a killer straight example that will add to the value of your L5 or custom project.
