For sale – 1 x Roland TR-606 with full EXFADE MKII modifications. In excellent condition. 100% functional. Full upgraded Quicksilver CPU which gives full Midi control whilst keeping sync 24 intact + so much more.1 x power supply & Tr606 manual and the Quicksilver upgrade CPU manual on a CD. Meet an 808 killer! A reluctant sale! The Tr606 is regarded as one of the all-time classics when it comes to drum machines but is not as well-known or used as its bigger brothers the 808 and 909. Used by many artists, from Aphex twin (he also has had his 606 extensively modified) to Jimi Tenor. Check out the rising prices for this unit these days. A Roland Tr606 even in average condition is selling for £300-400 these days. Add the extensive professional modifications and bespoke wooden casing (£400) and the Quicksilver CPU upgrade (£200), Individual outs (£72) and you are talking about £1k+ to be able to buy this unit – (Sadly an option no longer available as this company no longer offers Tr606 modifications) However starting price here is a LOW 99p. Yep 99p These modifications really take this classic analogue drum machine into a whole new realm sonically and coupled with the Quicksilver CPU upgrade provides extensive sound shaping and programming capability not possible before on a Roland Tr606. For example being able to Accent each instrument individually rather than having to Accent the whole step/reversing patterns/rolls etc. etc. So let’s look at what is now different about this unit compared to the original Roland Tr606? Apart from the very nice wooden casing 22 Tonal Controls The Exfade MK II modifications adds 22 sound shaping controls that covers all 7 voices bringing it line with its siblings the 808 & 909. In fact it even outdoes them by adding tonal shaping not available on those units such as ‘Bass Boost’ for the Low Tom which can now be used as a second Kick drum and ‘Band Pass’ & ‘Low pass’ analogue filtering for the hats and cymbals which results in all kinds of metallic mayhem! With these modifications the range of sounds this unit is capable of now is extraordinary. What is great is that you will now have a whole new set of analogue sounds that very few other people will have access to. Not only that, with all the hype surrounding the Tr808 & Tr909 drum machines and the endless remakes/copycat designs of these classics this unit makes for a refreshing change. I’ve always loved the Tr606 in its original form or its raw sounds, it has more bite and fizz to it than the slinky sounds of the Tr808. These mods explore that potential even further, giving an enormous sonic palette from the subtle to speaker destroying. This does it all – add a little processing via the individual outs (again a feature not available on the original box) and you have the backbone of a track in itself. Here’s a breakdown of the tonal controls Bass drum – Pitch, Decay, Tone and Envelope. Snare drum - Pitch, Decay, Tone and Noise. Low Tom – Pitch, Tone, Bass Boost Hi Tom – Pitch, Decay, Level Cymbal – Pitch, Decay, Band pass filter, Low pass filter - please note if you d tune the pitch on this you introduce an oscillator tone as this requires a high pitched resonant oscillator to create its distinct sound. Open hat – Decay Hi hat – Decay Both Hi hat/Open hat - Band pass filter, Low pass filter Please note there is some bleeding between channels mostly the hi hats & cymbals (not too loud) as they share circuits and occasionally some LED noise, please note this is typical for the TR-606. All I have owned have had this. Personally it has never been a distraction but if bothers you a small gate effect seems to remedy this. Here are some audio/video examples of the different drum sounds and the various permutations available here:- Quicksilver CPU replacement chip – A major overhaul & significant upgrade The Quicksilver mod brings the TR-606 into the 21st century with tons of new sequencer applications and full Midi in and out. A good summary here:- Social Entropy has introduced the Quicksilver 606 CPU upgrade for the Roland TR-606 drum machine. This CPU itself cost over £200! However it’s worth every penny. Check out the many extra features;- The ability to program rolls, individual accents, longer sequences, MIDI and more. •The Quicksilver 606 introduces the capability to accent individual instrument triggers. A mix of accented and unaccented triggers can be placed on the same step. This ability makes it possible to program much more expressive patterns that weren’t possible on the original TR-606. •A new MUTE/ROLL mode has been added specifically for real-time performance. •MUTE mode allows muting of individual instrument tracks. Mutes can be applied in real-time and stored with a pattern or applied globally across patterns. •ROLL mode creates a note repeat of selected instruments. The time division of the roll can be changed in real-time for dynamic build-ups and variations. •Patterns can now be up to 32 steps in length, split across two 16 step sections. When extending a pattern from 16 to 32 steps, pattern data can copied automatically into the new section. Up to sixteen patterns can be chained for playback. •The sequencing engine supports standard grid and tap programming methods. A new real-time record capability also allows patterns to be entered live with a MIDI controller, with incoming velocity used to dynamically set accents. •Functions like copy and paste, randomize, rotate and reverse can be applied to individual instruments or entire patterns. •The extended track mode allows for complete songs to be constructed using patterns. Each track step has settings for instrument mutes, multiple repeats or pattern chains. •Changing between modes can be performed without stopping the sequencer. All data is stored in EEPROM memory, eliminating the need for batteries. •Enhanced MIDI connectivity provides synchronization, sequencer input and output, as well as a new “MIDI Control Mode” which allows the buttons of the TR-606 to be controlled remotely by any device that can send MIDI note messages. •Full MIDI System Exclusive support means that pattern and track data can be dumped to external devices for backup or sharing. USB MIDI can also be used for direct connection to various USB host devices. •USB connectivity is also used for easy operating system upgrades. Individual outs Each sound now has its own audio 1/4″ output, As soon as you plug a lead into one of these you isolate it from the main mix, a really hand feature for grouping sounds, and can thus can treat it with EQ/FX to your hearts content. Connectors to other equipment Connections include Separate 1/4″ outs. Midi In/Out Sync 24 In/Out Thanks you for reading this and getting this far – I can ramble on a bit – If you are considering a bid – Good luck!
