1974 (1st YEAR ISSUE) F. E. OLDS & SON "SUPER STAR ULTRA SONIC" MODEL V-102 - SILVER PLATED MEDIUM LARGE BORE PROFESSIONAL Bb TRUMPET WITH A STRAIGHT THROUGH AIR FLOW DESIGN AND INTERCHANGEABLE VALVES IN EXCELLENT CONDITION
I have been playing horns for 60 years...collecting and restoring vintage trumpets and cornets, and building custom horns for 49.  Over the decades I amassed a vast trumpet/ cornet collection.  During the past few years I have thinned out the herd and continue to do so.  All my horns are gig ready...cleaned, valves adjusted & aligned with new corks & felts when necessary. PLEASE LOOK AT THE OTHER HORNS I HAVE LISTED For your consideration, here is a 1st year issue, 42 year old professional grade Super Star Ultra Sonic Model that has been the representative example of a V-102 in my collection.  Its unique straight through air flow configuration was reportedly modeled after a Courtois Grand Siecle Model with a wide wrap tuning slide entering the 3rd valve casing after crossing over to the left side of the horn.  The air column then flows straight through the block (with lightweight interchangeable pistons with nylon trestles and guide rings) directly into the bell tail.  This design produces the least amount of resistance ever available...if you hate resistance, then this trumpet is the solution!  The 3rd valve slide is located on the right side of the horn, so a special angled throw ring was designed to allow the left hand easy access...I have seen this ring sell for $75.-$90. on eBay.  Contrary to some misinformation on the internet, the "Ultra Sonic" badge on the mouthpiece receiver refers not to the leadpipe, but to Olds newly developed one-piece seamless spun bells.  This 1st year issue V-102 trumpet is 100% original including the brass (not silver) 1st and 3rd slide throw rods and set screws...actually, the 1st slide saddle is solid nickel with a brass rod, the tuning slide water key is brass while the 3rd slide key is nickel, and both have brass set screws...this suggests Olds was using spare parts to assemble these early V-102's.  In 1974 the Super Star was priced the same as the Recording Model.
From the Olds Central website:

Note: The V-102 cost $495. in 1974 (the same price as the Recording Model) and is equal to $2,423. in 2016 dollars when adjusted for inflation.
This Super Star Ultra Sonic is a medium weight 2 lb. - 8.4 oz trumpet that will accommodate virtually any music style and acoustic venue.  The trumpet has a clear and resonant tone that is easily controlled...its sound is bold, fat, centered and focused.  It is an EXTREMELY free and open blowing horn with a rich, somewhat dark tone that produces a sophisticated edge when pushed, and loves to be piloted in the stratosphere.  This horn has excellent intonation...the low register is not flat, and is very resonant.  The 5th harmonic is great, and so is the upper register intonation.  Slots are superb.  Responsive and flexible, the V-102 makes a great jazz horn, but excels when playing commercial, legit, classical styles, studio sessions, and even performs well in small combos.Mechanically, the trumpet is in awesome condition with interchangeable lightning fast valves that are bright and shiny, and exhibit superb compression.  All slides operate with butter smoothness.  Cosmetically, there are many scattered micro pings/ ripples on the left side of the bell tube that really aren't noticeable unless one sights directly down the tube, a pencil point and a pin point ping on the bell tail, and some minor nicks and scratches scattered around the horn that are likewise difficult to see even in the high resolution photos.  Lastly, there are two areas (3 square inches) on the bell stem forward of the block that exhibit a slightly lighter and duller finish than the surrounding silver plate...perhaps something acidic/ caustic (?) spilled on the bell in the past and slightly discolored it.  They are not noticeable in the photos, but are apparent under certain lighting conditions.  I purchased the trumpet with these minor cosmetic flaws because it was an awesome, in tune, low resistance monster of a horn, and the blemishes meant nothing to me.
Except for the aforementioned minor blemishes, the trumpet is in superb condition.  I tend to be overly critical and as accurate as possible when describing my horns, so that no one receives any "surprises".  So, bid with confidence as I think you'll find my feedback speaks for itself.
