This old and very interesting antique handmade violin
is offered to the highest bidder with no reserve. The violin is, in my opinion, a very faithful copy of Carlo Testore made during the same period or shortly thereafter. It bears the label of Carlo Antonio Testore. This is a very old and heavily used violin in a remarkably fine state of preservation. Despite its age, around 250 years old, I can find no evidence of cracks or repairs.  The violin does have a modern neck, and the original scroll is fully bushed and grafted. There is an ebony crown over the button. The varnish, though somewhat worn, is intact and original and in very good condition. The set up is older, with fresh Thomastik Dominant strings. The pegs are well-fitted, turn easily and hold well. The bridge is quite old and stamped Daniel Moinel a Paris.
As mentioned, this is an older set up and could use some updating in the future.  The saddle should be replaced at some point and you might also want a new bridge and possibly a nut. The string and bridge heights and fingerboard projection are correct and the violin plays easily. The violin has a one-piece back with figure and flame that changes with the angle of the light. The back has small ebony pins at the top and bottom and the button is crowned. The top is straight grained spruce, tight and narrow near the joint and widening toward the flanks. The neck is to modern specs and probably dates to the later half of the 19th century.  The scroll and head are original. The back measures 354 mm, a size common for Testore, the vibrating string length is 328mm, the body stop is 195mm, and the neck stop is 130mm. These measurements are near perfect. The model is rather quirky, but very much in the style of Testore.  The ffs are asymmetric, as is the center bout. The back of the scroll is scooped out and plainly finished, the head is bold and very finely carved. The purfling is tightly inlaid close to the edges with fine bee stings bisecting the corners. The back pins, the ebony crown, the grafted scroll, the choice of wood, the four large contoured corner blocks and full linings, the model, detail and measurements are all evidence of a very carefully made copy or tribute to one of Milan's greatest violin makers. This is a beautiful violin in unusually fine condition.
The tone of this violin is bright, even across the strings, and responsive.  The sound is open and clean, airy and light, smooth and clear. While the overall impression when first played is light and quite delicate under the ear, the sound projects well. It is a very clean tone and remarkably even across the strings. While it isn't overpowering or a penetrating solo instrument, it does provide a nice, pure and clear singing sound with plenty of brilliance at projection to cut nicely.    The violin is particularly easy to play for a person with smaller hands who is uncomfortable stretching on an instrument that is larger. I found this violin easy to play and very quick and responsive yet forgiving. This is a fine and attractive handmade violin, in an exceptional state of preservation.
The bidding will open at $49 and the violin will sell to the high bidder regardless of price. This is a real auction. The high bidder wins regardless of price.
