Shime Daiko, Wadaiko Taiko Japanese Drum, floor stand, antique shell / new heads Wooden shell and stand of this drum date from the period 1850-1899 (Meiji Era) I imported it from Japan in 2004 and refurbished it with new heads. Unlike other antique drums you can buy on eBay, this one is in excellent condition, and perfectly playable due to the new heads. The drum’s shell is antique, crafted from one piece of tree in the traditional Japanese style. It has traces of gold varnish on the outside – drums used in Shinto temples were typically painted, as was this one. The wood is in great condition, no cracks. The original heads were not usable anymore, so I had new ones made in USA by Taikos.com in year 2005, excellent quality thick cowhide and crafting. I stopped using this Shime actively in 2006, therefore, the heads are as good as new. Price of the heads alone was 350 USD. This beauty looks archaic also due to its rope tuning. The wooden stand is antique Japanese, too. Note that it suspends the drum by the rope, thus avoiding any dampening or scratching. It is ideal for a cross-legged sitting position on the floor. Rope is standard hemp, you may want to replace it with something more practical; the rope looks good but is difficult to handle/tune.
