According to the serial number this bass was manufactured in January 1978. Very nice aged color of the truss rod cover and binding.Body and neck are in great condition with minimal dings. The (minimal) buckle rash on the back does not penetrate the finish. Surprisingly little fret wear for a bass this age.Plays and sounds awesome. The only reason I am selling it is because I have acquired another 4001 restoration project that will not require as much work. This Ricky needs some love. I bought it several years ago as a restoration project. It came with a bunch of non-original parts and the following issues:1) The truss rod was broken and there was slight separation of the fret board. It is obvious that the truss rod was improperly tightened; pre-1985 4001 basses require a different procedure for adjusting truss rods - this mistake is all too common and results in snapped rods and separated fret boards. I had the truss rods switched out with quality replacements, but I have never had the fret board separation fixed, even though this is a relatively cheap repair. It doesn't currently affect play-ability/sound/intonation/overall structural integrity of the neck (see pic #11). I have been playing the bass in this condition for several years now.2) The original bridge routing was filled with some sort of resin (looks like epoxy), and there is some resin stain on the body next to the bridge surround. You have to look close to see it - I tried to capture this in pic #9. If you are going to restore this bass to its original condition, the resin will have to be routed out and the stain buffed off.3) The following parts are not original to the best of my knowledge (other than the truss rods, I do not know the origin of these various parts):
Truss rods
Hipshot tuning machines
Pick guard
Bridge surround
Badass II bridge
Pickup selector switch
Knobs
Electronics - the current wiring supports the push/pull Rickenbacker vintage tone option and "Rick-O-Sound"
Straplocks
The bass will ship with 3 new sets of Dunlop 45/105 super-bright stainless steel strings (for which the bass is currently set up) in a non-original but new (2016) authentic Rickenbacker hard shell case (for which I paid over $200).My asking price is fair considering the vintage model, the cost of the case, and the minimal cost of repairs needed to keep this bass in tip-top functional condition. If you are a local buyer, I would be more than happy to deliver. Otherwise, I will ship the item via FedEx Ground fully insured.Sold as is - absolutely no returns.Item is being offered locally so this auction may end early. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have. I have tried my best to portray the actual condition of the instrument.
