Up for sale, a 1939 Epiphone Olympic archtop acoustic guitar in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Hand crafted in New York during the golden Pre-War era of the Epiphone company, the Olympic features a solid, carved spruce top with mahogany back and sides. This particular Olympic has been lovingly restored, featuring new white binding and a new heel cap, as well as a refinished body, highlighting the grain of the spruce top with a natural, blonde finish. A midrange forward and articulate sounding archtop, the Olympic is a little powerhouse with great projection and sweetness. If you're looking to comp chords and cut through in a larger ensemble, or want for a responsive, smaller bodied archtop that stands out as a solo instrument, the Olympic is an excellent choice.A favorite of alt-country guitar legend David Rawlings as well, the Olympic has risen to popularity in recent years and is simply a great sounding acoustic that lends itself to a variety of musical styles. We've had this guitar professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, and it's dialed in with fresh 12-53 phosphor bronze strings. The one-piece mahogany neck has a deep V shaped profile which is surprisingly well rounded and very comfortable for easy chording and lead work. The scale length measures a full 25 1/2" and the Brazilian rosewood fretboard has been professionally refretted with slender era-appropriate fretwire. The frets currently show only modest, uniform wear on frets 1-4, with no wear further up the neck. An adjustable truss rod is present in these early Epiphones as well, with access under the tongue of the fretboard. The nut width measures a full 1 5/8" in width, and the nut is the original hand carved piece of bone for optimal clarity and sustain. On the headstock, the original open back strip tuners are present and work as they should, along with the majority of the original "Epiphone" waterslide decal.A model that would increase in lower bout width over its original run, this Olympic has the wider 15 1/4" lower bout, with a body depth that measures 3 1/4". The bridge is custom made and hand carved from a piece of flamey maple with a bone saddle. This bridge and saddle complement accentuate the top end and note attack of the instrument in a very pleasing way. While the neck retains its original dark brown finish over the mahogany, the body has been stripped and resprayed with a light satin finish. There are still bits of the original dark sunburst finish beneath the fretboard extension over the body and in a few spots on the lower bout in particular. Accented by clean new white binding, the back and sides are a deep chocolate brown shade of mahogany, and the prominent grain on the back of the guitar is gorgeous. There is one slender and repaired crack in the most common spot, extending from the edge of the treble side F hole towards the lower bout edge of the top. The crack was very tight, parallel with the grain, and cleanly repaired long ago. This Olympic is a stunning sounding instrument, and many larger bodied archtops can't match the incredible power and nuance of this early New York-made Epiphone! The original black faux alligator chipboard case is included. This rare case retains the original latches, is structurally sound, and even has the stock leather handle. Please check out our shop "Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar" on the web, and feel free to call us directly with any questions at 206.399.8518.Shipping in the continental USA will be $60, fully insured and shipped via FedEx Ground.
