Up for sale, a 1963 Fender Jaguar finished in original Lake Placid Blue with a matching headstock! This guitar is 100% original aside from a professional refret with correct vintage sized fretwire and new nut, and the Lake Placid Blue finish is lovingly aged and honestly played, exposing the original Desert Sand basecoat where the forearm crosses the top of the instrument. All of the early Pre-CBS features of this model are present, including the mint green nitrate pickguard, flat pole piece black bobbin pickups, and a near mint blonde tolex hardshell case with black leather ends. This Jaguar is an early custom color example that has appeal for both serious players and discerning collectors who like an instrument they can actually gig from time to time. The tone of the flat pole Jaguar pickups is truly unique, and a feature only seen on Jags from 1962-early '64. These pickups have more body and fullness than the later staggered pole piece design, while still having plenty of twang and an articulate, touch sensitive responsiveness. The bridge pickup is glassy, clear, and balanced, with an ideal cutting rhythm tone with both pickups engaged, and serious roundness and bloom to the notes when the neck pickup is singled out.Of course, the Jaguar offers tonal options to both thicken up the sound and alternately make it even more snappy and thin. The "strangle" toggle (located on the hexagonal plate next to the individual pickup on/off switches) gives the guitar a treble heavy crispness, while the Rhythm Circuit (located on the guitar's lower horn) singles out the neck pickup, engaging a darker tone cap. The Rhythm Circuit provides one of the best sounds on this guitar, with a thicker, wooly tone that still has plenty of clarity, while adding warmth to your clean signal as well as giving an overdriven tube amp or your favorite fuzz pedal that little bit of extra low end push to make single note lines stand out. This Jag weighs in at 7lbs 14oz and is one of the lightest and most acoustically resonant Jaguars we've ever had in the shop. The guitar has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, with 11-50 strings, solid intonation, and comfortable action.
The neck has a medium C shaped profile, and indicative of Fender necks from '63 in particular, there's a bit more roundness to the shoulders of the profile than in previous or later years. While things are a bit more slender in terms of profile depth at the nut, by the time you reach the 7th fret there's notable chunk and roundness to the neck for a very substantial feel. The finish on the profile has been worn down to the smooth bare maple and feels great on the palm. The Brazilian rosewood veneer fretboard has clay dot inlays and has been freshly refretted, retaining the original 7 1/4" fretboard radius. The frets are immaculate and the guitar is virtually unplayed since the refret. The neck has the Jaguar's signature 24" scale with a traditional Fender "B" nut width of 1 5/8". The original single line Kluson Deluxe tuning machines are intact on the headstock and turn smoothly, with only light surface patina. The "Fender Jaguar" waterslide decal is in excellent shape and fully intact, with the separate "Offset Contour Body" decal also present. On the heel of the neck, the original factory date stamp is clean and bold, noting a July, 1963 date for the neck, as well as the Jaguar's model code ("1", given that in '63 the Jag was the newest and most expensive Fender model), and the B nut width. The original Lake Placid Blue paint stick markings can be seen in the pocket as well. All of the electronics work as they should, and the pair of original black bobbin Jaguar pickups compliment each other well, with strong output and original winds on both pickups. The original switches are present in the lead circuit, hexagonal control plate, and the Stackpole pots date to the 48th week of 1963. The pots and switch in the Rhythm Circuit are original as well. The routes on the body are untouched aside from a slight enlargement of the bridge pickup route, where another similarly sized (likely Strat-style) pickup was installed for some time before the original Jaguar pickup was reinstalled. The stock shielding plates on both the body cavities and the underside of the pickguard are present. The original hardware on the body is completely original, with only moderate patina on the bridge saddles and clean and stock mute, vibrato unit, control plates, and neck plate. The foam on the mute is new, and the mute still pivots up and functions as it should. The vibrato unit engages very smoothly and responds to the lightest touch, giving the player the ability to do subtle trills, surfy bends, and deeper dives with ease. The vibrato retains its original spring and arm, which locks in securely. The mint green nitrate pickguard provides the perfect contrast to the custom color finish, and this pickguard alone is extremely valuable and clean, sitting particularly flat on the body with no warping or shrinkage. In terms of cosmetic wear, this guitar has been consistently and honestly played and the clear coat has only faintly yellowed over the Lake Placid Blue. There is buckle rash on the back down to the bare alder and assorted small dings and nicks around the edges of the body, but the most prominent wear is where the forearm crosses the top of the guitar. In this area, there's a gorgeous patch of Desert Sand that has been revealed and on the edge of the contour the bare alder can be seen as well. The originality of the finish has been verified under a blacklight, and in this light the entire body, neck, and headstock have a uniform glow.
The original hardshell case is included, and in contrast to the use the guitar has seen, the case is near mint, with smooth blonde tolex and clean black leather ends. All three latches are intact and functional, and the original black leather handle is present as well.
