Up for sale, a D'Angelico Excel SS in exceptional, near mint condition and in perfect working order. This prototype was modified by Rex Larsen, one of the architects of the modern Excel line. The key aspect of this build that makes it a one-off is a pair of braces that run along the length of the top alongside the pickups. These braces improve the sound by tightening up the bass response and really making the top end pop. According to Rex, this is the only Excel SS with this unique mod, and the notes from the original listing for this instrument will be included with the sale. The Excel SS is a single cutaway archtop with a 15" wide lower bout and a highly figured flame maple body. Finely crafted in Korea and boasting premium hardware and pickups, the Excel is an incredible value and a refined instrument worthy of the D'Angelico name. The stock pickups were manufactured in the USA by Kent Armstrong, and the tone is detailed, rich, and warm. An instrument that can do some much more than Jazz, the SS is perfectly at home in a variety of Blues and Rock scenarios, with a bridge pickup that handles gain very well and has a harmonically complex and responsive tone. The guitar is also remarkably lightweight, and is only 6lbs 12oz on our scale. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this guitar is dialed in with fresh 10-46 strings and low, comfortable action. The maple neck has a C shaped profile that borders on the more slender side of things, with shoulders that are fairly generous and keep the neck feeling substantial. The rosewood fretboard features multi-ply binding as well as pearloid split block inlays and immaculate fretwire. Measuring 1 11/16", the nut is a hand carved piece of bone for optimal sustain and note clarity. On the headstock, the Grover Rotomatic tuning machines turn smoothly with stair-stepped Imperial buttons. The electronics all work as intended, with individual Volume and Tone controls for each pickup coupled to a three-way pickup selector switch. The gold hardware is flawless and the guitar features some signature Art Deco touches including the stair-stepped tailpiece, carved wooden knobs, and bound tortoise pickguard. Cosmetically, the guitar is flawless, and you simply won't find a more unique Excel SS!The original D'Angelico branded TKL hardshell case is included.
