This is a vintage (serial number 452469) Olds Geyer Wrap Double French Horn. This instrument has what is known as a "Geyer wrap" meaning that unlike a Kruspe wrap horn the change valve is located on the far side of the horn from the player. This gives the horn a slightly lighter, crisper feel. The horn plays very well. The valves move well with very good compression and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, there are a few small dings and pings, as well as light scratching and pitting throughout the instrument. The leadpipe has been upgraded to a Conn 8D leadpipe, which makes the horn a bit brighter and more direct. The bell engraving reads: “F.E. OLDS & SON/ FULLERTON/ CALIF.” All this is visible in the pictures, and none of it affects the playability of the horn. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop, and repaired to full playability. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with a somewhat worn hardshell case and a mouthpiece in good condition. How the horn plays: Full, bright sound. The horn is very responsive and free-blowing. The Bb and F side timbres match well once the two sides of the horn are intonated. The horn has a good dynamic range, capable of a full, edgy fortissimo and a mellow, smooth pianissimo without breaking up. The high and low registers speak very well, with both registers being secure. The low register particularly has a very full, rich sound. This horn plays very well and is light and quick with a big, focused sound.
