A fine antique french master violin made by Nicolas Augustin Chappuy, 1755.Fine antique french master 18th century violin made by Nicolas Augustin Chappuy in Paris in the year 1755. The violins made by Chappuy can be of different qualities. Nicolas Chappuy, who was the brother of Nicolas Augustin and worked in Mirecourt at the same time, made instruments which are often confused with Nicolas Augustin's work, though being of inferior quality. Some instruments attributed to Nicolas Augustin and bearing his fire brand on the button were quite certainly made by his assistants in his workshop. This one was made by the master himself, and bears on the inside back its original label, reserved for his best instruments. The woods have been carefully chosen, with a top made of two pieces of spruce, showing narrow grain lines widening towards the edges. The back is made of two parts of a wonderful flamed maple, the curl ascending from the center joint. The ribs and head are of the same wood. The f holes, far away from some bad ones often used for the instruments produced in his workshop, are elegant. The pattern, quite large with short corners, is highly recognizable. The head is a summit of french 18th century elegance. The varnish, of a delicate golden color with a more browner one at the center, is a wonder by itself, and entirely original. A very attractive instrument !The violin is in aa good restored condition, with a repaired crack under the left f hole, a new neck that has been changed some time ago,  with two pins on the button. The head has been beautifully grafted on the neck. Nothing to sound post region or bass bar : a very reasonable condition for its age.The violin has been revised and set-up, including rosewood and bone pegs, a rosewood tailpiece with ebony fret, a rosewood chinrest, a new sound post, a Despiau bridge and Thomastik Dominant new strings set.On the button can be found the remain of the Chappuy fire brand with its coat of arms. Under the button we find its original brand "CHAPPUY A PARIS" (his brother used "N.CHAPPUY"). On the inside back can be found the original Chappuy label, "Augustinus Chappuy fecit parisiis anno 1755".The sound is extraordinary, deep and mature, brillant and projective, responsive and full of colors : a rare french master violin that will allow you the most complete repertory! The violin is guaranteed 100% authentic and original. It comes with its certificate describing the instrument in and including a $15,000.00 valuation.Dimensions are the following :LOB : 359 mm.Upper bouts : 170 mm.Middle bouts : 121 mm.Lower bouts : 208 mm.The instrument comes with a new rectangular case.
