Up for auction is a vintage (serial number 425186) Conn 6D Double French Horn. This instrument is what is known as a "pre-letter" 6D, since there is no letter preceding the serial number. These horns were built in Conn's Elkhart factory, and are considered to be superior to any horns that were built later--Conn 6Ds built during the era when this horn was built were still being built as professional instruments, a lighter alternative to the Conn 8D. The horn is in very good condition and plays very well. The valves move well with very good compression and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of the instrument, there are a few small dings and pings and some isolated spots of scratching throughout the instrument. There is also a patch on the first branch near the main bell ferrule and a soldery repair on the 3rd F side slide, and there are some small brazed repairs on the bell tail near the bell ring. The original bell was damaged, so the horn was converted to a screw-bell configuration and the flare is a newer replacement. The bell flare is lacquered. This is visible in the pictures, and none of it affects the playability of the horn. The engraving reads "C.G. CONN LTD./ ELKHART-IND./ -U.S.A.-/ 425186". This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop and repaired to full playability. This horn has had the old lacquer removed to improve its tone, as well as for aesthetics. Therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with a briefcase style screw bell case in good condition and a mouthpiece in good condition. How the horn plays: Big, full and warm sound. The tone is light and smooth. The horn is responsive and free-blowing. The Bb and F side timbres match well, with the Bb side being just a bit brighter. The horn has a very good dynamic range. The low and high registers speak very well.
