Over-the-shoulder (OTS) tuba/saxhorn, Civil War era, ready to play
Estimated price for orientation: 5 499 $
Category: Tubas
Class:
Description
Don’t miss this opportunity to own a rare Civil War era over-the-shoulder tuba. It is pitched in E-flat. Such an instrument is also referred to as E-flat saxhorn or E-flat bass. It is made of unlacquered brass. The manufacturer is Kummer & Schetelich, Baltimore Maryland. They were in business 1863-1875. All tuning slides and valves work well. The valves were just serviced by Mark Metzler of Metzler Brass. This instrument has been play tested by someone with extensive experience playing tubas from this era. It plays very well with a big, fat tuba sound. It has good intonation and “slots” nicely. However, keep in mind that tubas of this vintage have a different feel than modern tubas. The valves have been lubricated with Tech-Oil as recommended by Mark. A bottle of this oil is included. With the main tuning slide all the way in this tuba plays at approximately A= 450. There is enough length in the main tuning slide to allow this tuba to play at modern pitch (A=440). (It has been used at a number of TubaChristmas performances.) The mouthpiece that has been used with this tuba over the years is a Shilke 60 bass trombone mouthpiece. It fits the mouthpiece receiver well and is large enough to function as a small tuba mouthpiece. There are a number of patches as shown in the photos. There are some dings and scratches as you would expect with an instrument this old. The hub nut on the 1st valve is a reproduction. The seam in the bell above the name plate has some cracks. It was Mark’s opinion that the seam is still structurally sound and should not be patched. Additional photos can be sent upon request. Another bit of history with this tuba includes Muhammad Ali. On August 5, 1997, there was a fundraising event held at Muhammad Ali’s estate in Berrien Springs, Michigan benefitting Southwestern Michigan College and Lake Michigan College. This tuba was used in an old horn group that performed at this event. A photo was taken with Muhammad Ali holding this tuba. The owner of this photo has agreed to make a high quality copy of the photo to be included with this sale. Buy with confidence. You won’t be disappointed. Use the Buy It Now option before someone else does. Due to the value and size of this instrument, local pick up is preferred. If this instrument is shipped, a wood crate will be custom built by Mark Metzler. The extended handling time is to allow for the building of this crate. Will ship to the continental U.S. only
