Clementi & Co. – Boxwood 8 keyed - Large holes flute. Main Stamp: Stamped on On barrel, midjoint, and foot: PATENT CLEMENTI & Co LONDON On the third section: CLEMENTI & CO / LONDON. All the stamps are clearly visible and well made. Date: Made in ~1860. Material: Amazing Boxwood with sterling silver (900) keys and Ivory rings. System: professional English flute, Simple System, with 8 keys and a footjoint to C. Condition: Pads are new and the thread is been recently replaced. A crack in the 3rd joint and another in the Footjoint have been professionaly restored. One of the Ivory rings has been replaced twice, now has a proper match. The flute looks in great playable condition.
Unusual features: The Ivory rings are narrow, in a very elegant way, much more than the standard style of that age. The barrel slide is covered in a graduate sleeve of boxwood, much more common in earlier flutes. Comment: The sound is incredibly “creamy”, it is a great player.Rare to find such a boxwood flute with large holes and rounded sound. Comparable to Rudall & Rose boxwood flutes.
Intonation is standard for that period, B and A are bit sharp, F# and Low D slighty flat, depending on the player ability. Sounding length / Measurements -fully compressed- : - total length 65,5 cm - middle of the embouchure to the end 58.3 cm - length of head including barrel 23 cm - embouchure 1.2 x 1,0 cm. Overall length: 65,5 cm. Weight gram: 327 g. (extremely light for a keyed flute)

Muzio Clementi, the composer and performer, who founded a musical instrument business in London. He would not have had anything directly to do with the manufacture of flutes such as this. According to historians they were made for the Clementi company by Thomas Prowse Senior, and his son Thomas Prowse Junior continued to make them subsequently under his own mark into the 1860s.
