Shure Level Loc & Audio Master Mixer and Compressor Dating from the late 1960's, and manufactured in the USA by Shure, this pair of Shure units have been rigorously tested in studio conditions, and are working correctly.The Level Loc has recently been serviced. Controls and features The units controls are pretty standard or a mixer and compressor.The Level Loc ratio setting are via a 3 position sliding switch on the front of the unitsSwitchable "hi/low" impedance switches to he rear of the unit. Cosmetics The units are in good condition considering their age. A few marks and scratches to the units. See Photos for condition Further info This is a great chance to own a very rare set of classic gear, in working condition. The most desirable unit in the collection is the Shure Level Loc..... the King of smash box limiters, with working units selling for as much as £800-£1000 when in good working shape! In fact, i sold my last unit to Moles recording studio for £850.The Shure Lev Loc is a brick wall limiter, as used by MANY top producers over the years, such as: Butch Vig (most notably on Nirvana's album Nevermind ) Joe Chiccarelli, Tchad Blake, and probably the best mix engineer in the world, Cenzo Townshend, who bought his Level loc from me a year or two ago. A short description of the Level Loc from the web, that sums it up well: "The Level-Loc is aptly named. Regardless of what you put in – a baby’s breath or an atomic blast – you get the saaaaame level out. Zero dynamics. It’s pretty uncanny. And a great sound for heavy rock drum beats." The Level loc usually has to be run via a 9V battery, as it doesn't come with it's own mains power supply.
But power can be daisy chained from the Reverberation Mixer - as per the Level Locs instruction manual- via the auxiliary cables that have been professionally installed and modded to the Level Loc during it's recent service.This avoids the need of a battery to power the unit, and as the battery will only last for 10 hours of use, it's a MASSIVE bonus, and also improves the sound of the unit too! The Reverberation Mixer is a sharp and nasty sounding mixer. Excellent for adding some aggression and dirt to Vocals, Snare and Guitar. Unfortunately, the spring tank inside the unit is beyond repair.... BUT a new 17 inch tank has just been attached in it's place, and sits externally, either beside the unit or on top of it. It can be easily removed when not in use or if not desired, simply by unplugging the phono leads. It's a HUGE upgrade too over the pretty useless and terrible original. Only a couple of inch long springs are in the original tank!Usually, these Shure units are sold without rack housings, and as they're 11 inches wide, this means you would have to fabricate a housing for them to be able to rack up correctly..... fortunately, the units up for sale come with an original steel rack mounting housing, to fit the Reverberation Mixer straight into your rack, while the remaining Level Loc unit has rubber feet, so it can be placed on top of the Reverberation Mixer in your rack, if you don't want them sitting on a table top.
These units are not like modern, mild mannered, quiet outboard, they are aggressive and noisy, but do an awesome job on drums and busses, that's why the prices have rocketed so much recently, i guess. The Reverberation Mixer runs on US 110v, but comes complete with a step down transformer for use in the UK... So is "Plug and Play" ready!
