Made in limited numbers in 2016, G&L has produced a run of nitrocellulose lacquer guitars in some great classic colors. A true glossy finished; not relic'd or aged, with a lovely understated lacquer sheen. Wrapped in an elegant Butterscotch lacquer, this ASAT combines the timeless layout of Leo Fender's groundbreaking Telecaster®, with G&L's outstanding workmanship and specially design Magnetic Field Design pickups.

Essentially is was the available process at that time, and it requires several very thin coats, and is more time and labor intensive than todays polyurethane finishes. Because of it's cost and high labor content, it's only found on higher end guitars. It's also highly flammable and requires special handling and ventilation.The many thin layers of lacquer that make up the nitro process are felt to be more resonate and acoustically superior to the thicker poly finishes common on guitars today. Finish chemistries and thickness are absolutely crucial to the tone of acoustic guitars and classical instruments, and while lacquer is certainly not a "green" process, for some it is the only finish that will do.While G&L does an excellent poly finish, placed side-by-side it is pretty easy to tell the two apart. While both are smooth and neatly applied, the nitro Butterscotch has a lower less "plastic" sheen, and the overall coloring is more subdued and sophisticated looking. Visually it has the appearance of being a "thinner" finish, although there is no way to actually measure thickness. Ditto for the tinted nitro neck, which looks almost glass-like in appearance, with less finish build up around the frets than a poly neck. It's truly elegant, and like all necks that are finished after the frets are installed, the process of removing the finish from the frets results in an extra high level of polish.Does a finish have a "tone" of it's own. We'll leave that argument to the gear pages, but the concept of thinner more flexible finishes being beneficial certainly makes sense. It's wood after all, and even on a solid body guitar you want it to resonate. In any event, we've played dozens of ASAT guitars, and this nitro ASAT Classic is certainly an excellent example of the breed. Like the nitro Legacy we recently sampled, this ASAT gives the impression of having exceptional clarity, sustain, and note separation. The wide dynamic range of G&L's MFD pickups seemed to be enhanced by the lacquer finish, and we experienced both very strong low frequency response from the neck pickup, and an extended and spacious high end. The additional perceived high end did not result in an overly bright guitar, more so a feeling that there was "room" around each note. We're also a big fan of the twangy, more middy ASAT bridge pickup, and the MFD design goes a long way to reduce the icy, spiky tone that some Teles have. We were pleased with how it responded in the nitro ASAT; the tones were clean and bright but with a sweetness that makes it something you can play all night long.If you are already familiar with the G&L ASAT Classic, there is nothing not to like about this guitar. It's a beautifully finished, lightweight swamp ash guitar that seems to have a heightened sense of sonic awareness. If you are looking to jump into the Tele-style end of the pool, the ASAT Classic gives you all that plus the enhanced dynamic range and fidelity of G&L's Magnetic Field Design pickups. As we like to say, with the ASAT Classic you can be playing Classic Rock Saturday night, and a Square Dance Sunday afternoon.Who would have guessed that two pickups and a slab of wood could be so much fun?
