1981 Washburn Eagle MIJ & New Hard Case £599.00    Top of the range model from Washburn's Wing Series

Wing series guitars don't come up too often. They were built in the Yamaki  and Matsumoku factories in Japan between 1979 & 1984. This particular guitar is a "B" series Eagle and it can be dated to 1981. The Falcon & Hawk guitars tend to be more common and I have had four or five of them  but this is my first Eagle. It features an Ash body with a carved Maple top, a set in Maple neck with an Ebony fingerboard & twin Washburn "Power Sustain" pickups with coil split facility. Other features like mother of pearl body biding, brass bridge & brass nut & gold coloured hardware make this a really nice guitar. This particular instrument has had quite a lot of use over its 35 year life and there are quite a few knocks & scrapes which I have highlighted. The frets are in pretty good shape but could maybe do with a fret dress at some point. During set up I noticed that the trussrod would operate but was quite stiff.  It plays well  the pickups are very powerful.  The guitar will be supplied with a new black fitted case as shown in the gallery photos. The shaped case it arrived in wasn't the original and was a very poor fit. This style suits it better.I have added photos showing this new case and also one showing the condition of the frets which I was asked about. There is some wear to the frets but this is not significant & the guitar is nowhere near requiring a refret. There are a couple more photos of the frets shown on my website. Look for the page "Washburn Eagle"For more photos of this guitar please visit my website (whitstableguitars.co.uk) where there is a full photo gallery for this guitar with more pictures of the frets etc.

A stunning looking guitar. There were one or two notable players in the 80's I remember seeing the guitarist from Abba using a white one!

Note the mother of pearl binding around the headstock to match the body, the gold tuners, brass nut & a wooden trussrod cover

The back of the guitar is reasonably good & the photos flatter it a bit. Note the two "comfort cutaways" one to give better access to the high frets. Also note the through body stringing

Serial number confirms manufacture as 1981. Tuners are stamped "George Washburn"

Another shot of the back. I had to fill smooth and polish a number of dents in the back. It looks significantly better than when it arrived but it isn't perfect. What it is, however, is all original with no obvious parts replaced

This mark is on the top, below the neck pickup

A knock on the lower horn

A noticeable scrape on the lower edge

and a few scratches around the input socket

The control cavity. All looks untouched. It actually has a metal cover which is something I haven't seen before

So, to sum up, not perfect but a good, original & very well priced 1981 Eagle with a new hardcase that looks good and plays well.
