Here is a vintage (serial number 642903) Holton H-479 Double French Horn. This is a solid nickel silver Kruspe wrap symphonic double horn. The Holton 479 is a 379 that has been upgraded to a screw-bell configuration. This horn has had its original bell replaced with a professional quality Conn 8D bell with standard Alexander bell rings. This horn is in very good condition, and plays very well. The valves move well with good compression and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, there are a few small dings and pings, and some isolated scratching and pitting throughout the horn. There is also a patch on the inner wrap, and a piece of the Bb side third slide has been replaced. The engraving on the bell reads “CONN/ 8D/ USA” and the leadpipe reads “HOLTON U.S.A. H379”. The imperfections are visible in the pictures, and none of them affect the playability of the horn. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop, and repaired to full playability. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with a somewhat worn briefcase style screw bell hardshell case, and a mouthpiece in good condition.How the horn plays: Full, warm and dark sound. The tone is mellow, smooth and sweet. The Bb and F side timbres match well. The horn is responsive and free-blowing. The high and low registers speak very well and are comfortable to play in. The horn has a good dynamic range, capable of an edgy, strong fortissimo without blatting and a soft, full pianissimo without breaking up. All horns are located at Silver & Brass Music Shop710 N.
