Up for sale is my beautiful Soloway Swan guitar, built in Portland, Oregon by Jim Soloway in 2008.Jim Soloway did not seem to have a “standard” configuration for his guitars. Each one seems unique, with different combinations of woods, chambering, semi-hollow, pickup types and configurations, string numbers, tremolo, hardtail, f-holes, switching, single-cut, double-cut, you name it. I have owned a few of these and have played dozens of them over the years. I have never found a bad one, but a few stand out in my mind as extra special. This is, without a doubt, the best one I’ve ever encountered, and I’ve kept if around for that reason. The body is one piece of slab-sawn Korina, with a one-piece AAAA quilted Big Leaf Maple top. It is bound in a beautiful Black/White/Tortoise binding. The neck is Eastern Rock Maple with an Indian Rosewood fingerboard, and a headstock overlay of some Rosewood variety, but I am not sure which it is, Indian or perhaps Cocobolo. It’s hard to tell for sure. The tuning machines are locking Hipshot tuners, and the bridge is a Hipshot hardtail, with strings running through the body.It has three Vintage Vibe “HHC” humbucker-sized single coil pickups. These pickups are very special. They have remarkable clarity and depth of tone, somewhere between a clear P90 and a Jazzmaster sound. With a 5-way Stratocaster-style selector switch, the tonal varieties available from this instrument are quite stunning. The very long scale length of this instrument makes it ideal as a baritone, but can also be strung and tuned to concert pitch. I’ve had it all over the place, from concert all the way down to B. It could go deeper, but I’ve never found the need to. I’ve had it strung with everything from 9-42 to 13-56, and it just takes them all in stride. The combination of woods provides a clear, detailed, sweet and rich tonal palette, certain to please almost anyone. The setup is perfection, and it truly plays like butter. The condition is “Near Mint”. The only thing keeping it from being “Dead Mint” is a tiny BB-sized dent in the finish on the back, near the high-E string ferrule. The indentation does not penetrate the finish.Overall length is 38”. The body is 12 5/8" at the lower bout and 8 5/8” at the waist. The scale length is 27", neck width at the nut is a comfortable 1 21/32”. Action at the 12th fret is a super-fast and easy 3/64" on all string. The neck is straight as can be with less than 1/64" relief. There are no high frets, buzzes, dips or twists. The instrument is in perfect playing condition. It weighs in at a very light and comfortable 7 lbs, 4 oz, or 3.28 Kg.If it’s so great, why am I selling it? As I get older, I find myself playing longer scale and baritone guitars less and less, and going back to my roots, wanting Strats, Teles, Les Pauls and Firebirds, and instruments deeply influenced these designs. This one just isn’t getting played enough to justify keeping it. It’s a pity for me, but a benefit for you.It comes with its original rigid foam and Cordura case, which provides good protection, yet weighs very little.Because of the use of rosewood on this guitar, I can only ship it to a US address, no export. Sorry! The instrument comes with a 48-hour approval period. If, within the 48-hour period, you decide that the instrument is not for you, simply return it to me in the same condition as I sent it out, with full insurance, and I will refund your purchase price, minus shipping to you.
