Up for auction is a vintage (serial number 997514) King "Fidelio" model 2269 Double French Horn. This instrument is in very good condition and plays very well. The valves move very well with very good compression, and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of the instrument, there are some small dings and pings and some isolated patches of light scratching and etching throughout the instrument. All this is visible in the pictures, and none of it affects the playability of the horn. The engraving on the bell reads "KING/ 2269/ USA". This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop and repaired to full playability. This horn has had the old lacquer removed to improve its tone, as well as for aesthetics. Therefore this horn is finished in pure brass, and fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina.  This instrument comes with a worn hardshell case and a mouthpiece in good condition.King started producing the "Fidelio" Model in around 1978 with the introduction of the Model 1178 "Fidelio". The Model 1178, 2269, and 2278 were all "Fidelio" models, while the 1170 and 2270 were "Eroica" models. These horns were completely redesigned by George McCracken, and they are a radical departure from the design of previous King horns. The most obvious changes are in the shape of the Bb side of the horn beneath the finger buttons, as well as the shape of the primary branch of the horn leading to the bell expansion. These pieces of tubing have been altered with gentler curves, resulting in smoother airflow. The shape of the leadpipe expansion and bell throat on Fidelio models are also very different from the older King horn, the 1159 (later renamed the 2259).
How the horn plays:  Very open, full, and resonant sound. The tone is smooth and warm. The horn open, responsive, and free-blowing. The F and Bb side timbres match well. The high and low registers speak very well and are feel secure to play in. The horn has a good dynamic range, capable of playing a soft, mellow pianissimo without breaking up and an edgy, strong fortissimo without blatting. This is a very good horn and is fun to play. All horns are located at Silver & Brass Music Shop710 N. Curry St. Carson City, NV89703(775) 301-6289
