Up for sale, a 1961 Gretsch Clipper model 6186 hollowbody electric guitar in excellent condition and perfect working order. Similar in construction and features to the Gretsch Anniversary models, the Clipper eschews any unnecessary ornamentation in favor of simplicity of tone and operation. Sporting a single Hilo'Tron single coil pickup, this instrument would be right at home in any rootsy musical situation from Americana to Jazz to Blues, with its warm, percussive midrange and full warm low end presence, which never gets overly boomy. There's a top end zing and articulation found with this pickup that's unique to the HiLo design, with a sweet hollow twang and clarity that benefits this guitar's hollowbody design. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this guitar plays well with fresh strings and comfortable action.The maple neck has a nice round medium C shaped profile that's not too bulky or too slim, with a 1 11/16" nut width. The rosewood fretboard sports neo-classic thumbnail inlays and the instrument has been cleanly refretted with jumbo fretwire. These frets show virtually no wear and play cleanly up the neck with well rounded crowns, easily out performing the stock fretwire. Of note, the thumbnail inlays are particularly rare on this model but found on the single Anniversary, and in '61 there was clearly some overlap between the features of these models, making this a more "upscale" Clipper than most. The headstock boasts a black truss-rod cover, pearloid inlaid Gretsch logo, and a set of modern replacement Kluson Deluxe tuning machines that turn smoothly and hold pitch well. There is a very slender and professionally repaired fracture at the headstock joint, which can be seen in the included close-up photo. This repair is smooth to the touch and the joint is structurally sound, responding well under full string tension.The single cutaway body features a stately two-tone sunburst nitro lacquer finish with cream binding, black pickguard, and chrome knobs, pickup, and trapeze tailpiece. Cosmetically, this guitar is in great overall condition, with some light finish wear at the forearm bout, both on the top surface, as well as the side, and the a small spot on the back right at the upper waist. There is also some concentrated wear around the tuner ferrules.
