Description
Up for a no reserve auction, hi bid wins is a pretty rare very early post war original Gibson RB100 5 string banjo, s/n 6509-39, from the original owners estate, and its original green lined Gibson labeled hard case (most green lined Gibson cases are pre war from experience with guitars I have had) Anyway, I do not know a lot about banjos, so what I have found is this is the GOOD RB100, and one of the 1st post war Gibsons, and could have been made as early as 1949 or as late as 1954 from the serial number, and I would say in most likely is towards the later of the 2 due to the single bound resonator from what I have learned. I have listed this for less than half of what I have seen these sold for on the internet, so someone should get a great deal on a nice rare Gibson 5 string banjo!!!! Apparently there are not a ton of these early original pretty much un-molested 5 strings around, so here is a good chance to get one at a fair price! I also read that much of the parts for these were made from left over pre war stock, but I dont know enough about them to judge for myself. I am selling this banjo AS FOUND, AS IS, as I do not work on banjos, and I will let that be handled by the new owner, though it actually seems good and playable as it sits. All I did was clean and polish the corroded original frets and fingerboard with 0000 steel wool, lemon oil the fingerboard, clean the back of the neck so you could see that the finish on this banjo will clean up great, and put new strings on it. I did not want to dissasemble it in any way, so it will need a good cleaning, and I have read that these are actually the best candidates for a Mastertone conversion. I really do not know how to set one of these up and I will leave that to the new owner. Anyway, The neck looks good with nice original frets, and not much wear at all to the Brazilian rosewood fingerboard. There are no cracks whatsoever in the neck or headstock (or anywhere else for that matter that I can see). The top 2 tuners were swapped out for the friction type, so they are not original. There were 2 tiny screws at fret 7 and 12, which I think you banjo guys n girls call "hooks", I removed them when I cleaned the frets since they were not original, so there are 2 tiny holes in those spots. The original one piece nickel plated cast flange looks to be in excellent condition with no cracks or damage, as does the nickel plated tension hoop. The nickel over brass arm rest shows wear down to the brass, and some of the tension hooks have corrosion on them, and one is missing the nut. I am not sure if the tailpiece is original as it is unmarked as far as I can see, but correct me if I am wrong. The resonator looks great and should polish or clean up very nicely as there are no real bad apparent sratches in the original sunburst finish. The original case shows plenty of wear, but is structurally good with all working clasps and good original leather covered handle, and in tact Gibson brass badge. There is some loose hardware included, and another bridge and old strings that were with it, which will also come with it. Please look at all the pics and ask any questions you may have. If you need to see more pics, let me know of what. Shipping will always be combined when possible! Shipping will be less than posted the closer you live to NY.
