This unique ASAT HH RMC features rear mounted controls for a pickguard-free look that showcases the beautiful Swamp Ash body. Outfitted with G&L-made humbucker pickups, the ASAT Deluxe gives G&L lovers the fatter tones of dual coil pickups plus the clarity and harmonic content of a longer scale and bolt-on neck. Wrapped up in the golden Honeyburst finish, this is a guitar that will stand out on the stage or in any collection.

That classic wood pairing provides a warm, beefy midrange with the maple top enhancing the high end response. On the other hand, Swamp Ash has a leaner midrange and more inherent clarity than Mahogany. The top end response is also detailed and clean without being sharp. Overall it's a slightly less aggressive tone than an ASAT Deluxe, and it trades some of the mahogany punch for overall tonal balance.The name of the G&L pickups are actually code for how they are made. So the AS4255B neck pickup is wound with 42 gauge wire for 5500 turns, and has black coils. Measuring in at around 8.4K it is wound a bit hotter than the PAF inspired Duncan '59 that used to be standard issue in the ASAT Deluxe. The G&L humbucker has the solid attack and full midrange you'd except from a Duncan '59, with a little more warmth. Neck tones were smooth and jazzy but not in a muffled or woody way. Maybe "refined" is a better descriptor, as the tones were clear but never rough around the edges.The G&L AW4470BC bridge pickup is a Black covered coil alnico humbucker wound 7000 times with 44 gauge wire. At 7000 turns, this G&L Humbucker puts out a stout 17.8K, and in terms of construction and specifications is very similar to the Seymour Duncan JB. While this sounds like a recipe for some pretty hot and nasty rock tones, dropping it into a swamp ash body has a definite influence on it's character. The forward midrange emphasis you normally get with this type of pickup is tempered by the swamp ash, and the treble tones have a sweeter less edgy nature. It sounds more like a really well balanced PAF than a JB, but with plenty of push to drive a low powered amplifier or pedal into some powerful and well-defined crunch.Oddly enough this guitar does not have the pull-tone control to split the pickups. However, with this guitar's level of clarity and balance we did not really miss this feature.This guitar comes with G&L's standard neck profile, the Modern Classic. Slimmer like the old "Slim C" the Modern Classic has a 9.5" radius and a 1-11/16" nut width. The string spacing is the same as their 1-5/8" Classic C necks, and the extra width is there to help prevent string fall off. Players who like an American Fender® neck will take to the Modern Classic. For those who liked the chunkier Classic C, it's still available as an option (along with about eight other choices). The Plek® fret finishing assures consistent playability up and down the neck, and the G&L saddle lock bridge provides a solid foundation and plenty of sustain. What many don't realize is that there is a small set screw on the side of the bridge, which is the saddle lock feature. Tightening this screw locks the saddles together for better sustain, and fewer random buzzes or sympathetic vibrations.To paraphrase a popular term, construction matters. The elements of longer scale, bolt-on neck, and swamp ash body creates a very different sonic experience as compared to a Gibson or other similar humbucker guitar. There is more attack, string-to-string note separation, and harmonic content; although a set neck guitar has an edge on overall sustain. If you like the idea of a guitar that can do everything from jazz to hard rock, but feel most comfortable with the clarity and string tension of a Leo Fender format, the G&L ASAT HH is a compelling and attractive alternative.
