Description
Brand: Gibson Exact Year: 1964
Model: SG Special

This is a 1964 Gibson SG Special. The serial number isn't visible so i'm basing the date on the original CTS pots, 13764. There are some issues with this guitar. First, the finish looks like the original polaris white at first glance, but it's not the original finish. It looks like at some point probably a while back, a thin white layer was spray painted over the original polaris white finish. It's hard to tell from the photos but the original finish checking is covered by the new layer of finish, as well as some little paint chips and dings. So, it's possible with enough effort you could carefully take the newer finish/overpray off and you'd save most of the original finish. No guarantees on that of course, but i've seen it done and with decent results. The other main issue is that the neck will need to be reset. The neck is very straight but the bridge is all the way down, the action is approx 7/64" from the low E string to the top of the 12th fret, the high E string is actually slightly above the bridge. There is also what looks to be a crack in the finish at the neck joint. Also, there is a side dot missing between the 18th and 19th frets, and the binding is loose but only on that spot. Besides that, the rest of the neck binding looks good, I don't see any cracks, routs or repairs anywhere. Like I said, the neck is straight, the truss rod is good and the original frets show (besides some oxidization) only very light playing wear. All the parts on this are original, the electronics look untouched. Both pickups work find and sound amazing. The control knobs all do work, they are a bit scratchy but contact cleaner should fix that. The 3 way toggle switch is scratchy and difficult to adjust. You will either have to fix the switch or replace it. The neck has a comfortable slightly thicker C profile. The nut is approx 1 11/16". The guitar weights 7.41 pounds. Comes with the original chipboard case which is kind of beat up but still works ok, all the latches/hinges are good. Actual item pictured below.
