Here is a vintage (serial number L00371) Conn 6D Double French Horn. This instrument was originally built in Conn's Elkhart factory. The original bell tail has been upgraded to a Conn 8DS tail, and the leadpipe has also been upgraded to a Conn 8D leadpipe. This alters the playing characteristics of the horn completely, taking away the characteristic 6D constriction and stuffiness, and instead making the horn open and warm, while still responsive and light. Therefore, this horn is a hybrid 6D/8D (technically a 6DS/8DS since it is a screw-bell model). The bell ring has standard Alexander threads, so the bell flare can also be upgraded if the player should ever wish to experiment with alternate flares. This horn is in very good condition and plays very well. The valves move well with very good compression and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of the instrument, there are a few small dings and pings and some isolated light scratching and pitting throughout the horn. All this is visible in the pictures, and none of it affects the playability of the horn. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop, and repaired to full playability. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with a used screwbell ultralight, semi-rigid soft-shell case, and a mouthpiece in good condition.
How the horn plays:  Very full, warm, rich and sweet sound. The tone is extremely smooth and dark, yet the horn is responsive and free-blowing. The high and low registers speak very well and are secure to play in. The horn has a very good dynamic range, capable of playing a strong fortissimo without blatting and a mellow pianissimo without breaking up. The Bb side timbre is a bit brighter than the F side, which is usual. This combination of parts means that this horn has the dark, full sound quality of an 8D, but the light, agile feel of a good 6D.
