Burial: Eagle Point National Cemetery, OregonThe late great Robbie "The Werewolf" Robison pioneered the genre of beatnik monster comedy folk, but not many followed in his footsteps. His one and only LP "At The Waleback" was recorded live in 1964, and while it is sort-of-famous for its great cover, it is really hard to find. MORE ABOUT ROBBIES LP RECORDIn 1964 this album with a life recording by beatnick comedy folk singer Robbie "The Werewolf" Robison was a nice performance and shows several qualities that make it an enjoyable listen. The guy is a good and convincing storyteller, as if most songs comes a story to it. It is pronounced and comes over well and is performed with attention in direction of entertaining the public. Even better are his disguises into the world of vampires, werewolves and Transylvania, where his voices becomes more theatrical, showed much of his talent, and would have been more noticed if it could have been over the place; it is a bit like a howling wolf-alike character in changing his voice or, performed like an Arthur Brown-alike theatre show of acting, but then expressed only with just his acoustic guitar that is mostly just simply strummed, it still has all of its necessary effect. Also a nice break we have with a couple of stories surrounding ‘flamenco’ (being true or not), while playing a more flamenco-style, in just one track. The comedy parts aren’t real top nudge of comedy itself, but the entertaining awards are all there, thanks also to its musical flow of contrasts in his vocal expressions, with guitar. This album was published around the time when vampire stories were popular in rock’n roll-midst, here the context is much more into cabaret-alike folk with occasional blues hints (the count Dracula song). This still makes it an odd side item even if it fitted within its times interests, at the same time you cannot really say it belonged to something of a local fashion. It simply is enjoyable, in a slightly timeless but also local stage manner. A time capsule which will send you back to the post-beatnik, pre-psychedelic / hippie scene from L.A.With his long red hair and matching beard, Robbie The Werewolf - a folksinger of the frantic variety with a fetish for monsters - was a striking performer with a manic stage presence, acting out his songs as much as singing them. His set consisted of his original songs and uniquely reworked versions of folk standards, played on a beat-up twelve-string guitar. This inspired some of the most bizarre songs ever committed to vinyl: listen to “Count Dracula” and its proto-psychedelic, amazing echo effects or the insane DIY rocker “Rockin’ Werewolf”. A few years later, Robbie became a founding member of L.A psychedelic band Clear Light.
