This is a vintage rhythm composer from the early 1980s. This TR-808 has been tested, appears and sounds to be functioning fully and properly. The unit is showing some light wear for its age, below the number sequence buttons, there has been black paint reapplied to the finish and the orange finish on the level knobs are lightly peeling. There is also two holes (see pictures) on the bottom of this unit that do not appear to be factory made and we are unsure of their purpose. This TR-808 is in good cosmetic condition for being 30+ years old and sounds fantastic. This is an iconic drum sequencer that altered the music industry, birthing Hip-Hop and Electronic music that we know and love today. Research this machine online, the amount of major hit songs that incorporated an 808 since its inception is endless. The Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer (a.k.a. the "808") was one of the first programmable drum machines ("TR" standing for Transistor Rhythm). Introduced by the Roland Corporation in the early 1980s, it was originally manufactured for use as a tool for studio musicians to create demos. Like earlier Roland drum machines, it does not sound very much like a real drum kit. However, the TR-808 cost US$1,195 upon its release, which was considerably more affordable than digital sampling machines such as the US$5,000 Linn M-1. Drum machines became an integral part of hip hop music as a cheap and simple way of producing a drum sound. The Roland TR-808 held specific appeal because of the ability of its bass drum sound to produce extremely low-frequency sounds. It also featured various unique artificial percussion sounds that characterized the TR-808: a deep kick bass drum, ”tinny handclap sounds", "the ticky snare, the tishy hi-hats (open and closed) and the spacey cowbell.” The Roland TR-808 would eventually be used on more hit records than any other drum machine, and has thus attained an iconic status within the music industry.Item will be professionally packed, shipped and insured to guarantee safe arrival The item pictured is the one you will be receiving. No additional accessories included. **BUY WITH CONFIDENCE****FREE SHIPPING WITHIN THE UNITED STATES** Tone House Studios has new Guitar and Recording Studio gear being added every week!!
