Before and after Miles Davis made the Martin Committee the most sought-after trumpet among jazz players, many of the greatest players in history preferred the 38B. This has been the horn of choice for Chet Baker, Freddie Hubbard, Maynard Ferguson, Carmell Jones, Tom Harrell, Jeremy Pelt and Dantae Winslow, among others. Cat Anderson used the 38B in Duke Ellington’s trumpet section – it is said that at one point the entire section was using it. No longer made, the legendary 38B has inspired copies by top makers including Kanstul and Adams. Those “in the know” will tell you that the best Constellations were made in Elkhart, Indiana. Later models were made Abilene, Texas, and have a reputation for being disappointing compared to the early models. This horn was made in 1960 in Elkhart. It’s the real deal. With its smaller bore, wider wrap, and larger bell, this model can whisper or scream. It’s very mouthpiece-sensitive, but its tone is almost always dark and thick, even in the upper register. It slots well throughout, especially upstairs. This horn is in excellent condition for its age -- mechanically and cosmetically -- and has been cleaned and serviced by Mike Paulson in Seattle (hence the black felts instead of the original red). There is only a bit of plating loss the 3rd-valve casing (see photos). Good luck finding one in better shape in this vintage. It will come in its original case, which is still functional. The latches on the case work, but the springs are old and worn out so you have to pry the latch open with your finger.I'll throw in a Stork 3C mouthpiece, which this horn seems to like a lot. The mouthpiece is like new, other than some insertion marks.I'll pay for shipping anywhere in the CONUS. Outside of that, it's a conversation.
