You know the age due to the resistors. They are green. The lesser TS9's selling for $500 won't show the insides. The seller does not want to show the brown resistors mixed in which is when the quality started to degrade as the parts ran out. I have another TS9 in another auction. That has the JRC chip. The t chip has more bite. The JRC is a little smoother. Both sound killer. Here is a video comparing the two:

This pedal is not cheap. It took me years to find two this good/working perfect. You can run the risk of buying blown/fixed/modded/cracked solder jointed ones etc but bid with confidence.
