He now endorses and plays Jody Jazz mouthpieces exclusively, so he purging some of his massive collection of mouthpieces that he has acquired over many years. Be sure to check out my other items for more great mouthpieces from this collection. There will be more to come later, so add me to your favorites list and check back later to see new additions. This auction is for a vintage Wm. S. Haynes flute. The serial number 21,xxx indicates a c.1951 production date. This is the 'golden era' of Haynes flute production. Instruments from this era are highly regarded and still in high demand by professional players today. Although this is a closed hole, C foot model, it is still very much a professional level instrument, in fact, these attributes are generally prefered by jazz players. No wonder Frank choose this flute and said it is one of the best he's ever played! This instrument is in very good physical condition, however it will require a re-pad to be made playable. At least one pad has fallen out, so it is not currently playable. Like I said, it is in great shape though. There is not a ding on it and it looks perfectly straight. The tenons are perfectly round and all three sections fit together nice and tight. Also, all three sections have matching serial numbers. The main body piece is stamped "The Haynes Flute MFG. by Wm. S. Haynes Co. Boston, MA" below that is the serial number, then "REG. Trade Mark", and finally "US". I assume the "US" stamp maybe indicates it was originally purchased by the military. The exterior of the case also is stamped "US". Oh, the body is also stamped slightly farther down "C" indicating the key. The head joint is stamped "registered trade mark" surrounding a stylized WS (overlaid), below which is the number 1 . I don't see any sterling markings, so I assume this one is not solid silver. If it is only plated then it shows remarkably little wear. I don't see any underlying metal (presumably brass) showing through. This instrument comes in its original French style case (no handle. The case shows typical wear and requires a bit of manipulation of the latches to get them to lock securely. I would advise getting a more modern case for day to day use, but keeping this one for collector's value.
This should be a great instrument once it is properly re-padded. It will be a fine flute for any serious doubler or jazz player.
