You are bidding on an exceptional violin/fiddle from the mid 1800's. The tone and volume is extraordinary for a violin in this price range, thanks in part to Thomas Hosmer's pristine craftsmanship. The other part being the wood and how well it has aged throughout the years. Solid wood instruments vary in tone and this one "sings" in the mid and high ranges and has that deep guttural "gypsy" sound in the low end. The action (presently setup for classical) is perfect.Mr. Hosmer said he would price this instrument at $3,500 if he was selling it in his shop. He further said that it plays and sounds like a far more expensive violin.To get another opinion (before listing it for sale) we took it to Fred Carpenter, owner of the renowned "Violin Shop" here in Nashville. Fred concurred with Thomas regarding the incredible tone of this instrument and recommended we ask $3,500 to $3,800 for it. He also played some much higher priced violins and this instrument matched or exceeded them in tone. He was also gracious enough to play it and we recorded it on an iPhone. Fred is the fiddler in the video.Here's a video demonstrating it in action. It goes back and forth from Fiddling to Classical playing styles a number of times. These are some serious players!!! The audio was not enhanced. Whatever the iPhone mic picked up is what you hear.Why are we selling it?This violin has been in our home for over 40 years. Truth is we were originally planning on keeping it as an asset for it will increase in value (and tone) throughout the years. But we are presently in the process of buying a home and are retiring some assets for that purpose.I've sold a lot of items on eBay. I have a flawless reputation and plan to keep it that way.
