Description

Boosey & Hawkes Symphony 1010 Bb Clarinet & Accessories** This was listed on Ebay a couple of weeks ago but I was told (thank you!) that there was a mistake in the date  of manufacture that I gave so I removed it until I could be absolutely sure of it's date. I had been told - and had no reason to doubt  - that it was made in 1975. However I have now researched this for myself and find that it was infact made in 1957. I suspect that it was correctly researched at some previous point but that someone simply wrote the 5 & 7 the wrong way round! Anyway, I'm sorry to have misled anyone. It IS a 1957 manufactured instrument!!!  (personally I've loved it so much that I really couldn't care if it was 1857!)
I'm a recently retired woodwind speciallist & this was my retirement present to myself. I bought it about a year ago, just started really getting into it & then badly damaged a front tooth. Having waited patiently for it to heal, the outcome is that my clarinets must go...... or the tooth will!Ok, then..... when I bought it, it had been 'serviced' but I wasn't satisfied so sent it to David Fingerhut (repairer extraordinaire.... if you don't know him you've missed out. Very nice chap, superb engineer, awful jokes! http://www.davidfingerhut.co.uk). When it came back it was stunning. I'd heard stories about the 1010 being hard to play & out of tune. Well, not THIS one! It is the loveliest clarinet I have played (with the exception of a Howarth's Cocobolo which I dared to try once but couldn't afford!) and I see why some of the great classic recordings were played on 1010's. It's light and responsive and sings......... but it does like to warm up for a  bit I found. That's ok. Good things are worth waiting for & anyway, you always warm your instrument up.......!!!!!The serial number suggests that this instrument was made in 1957 (!). It is in lovely condition. The keywork is gorgeous, the barrel shines like stainless steel, there are no signs of any cracks etc on the body. When it was serviced all this was checked, and the barrel was checked for any damage/warping. There was none & the measurements are all true. It was declared to be a 'very nice example'. The only real signs of 'wear' is that the 'gilt' on the lettering is worn. Of course, this was made long before the action vent was introduced to aid tuning. Obviously B&H found the need to add that but honestly, I couldn't find any reason to have done so with this clarinet. Maybe they varied a lot?The clarinet came with it's original mouthpiece which works very satisfactorily but because this was my present I bought 2 others. An Ed Pillinger and a Peter Eaton. I'm including the Pillinger but will be selling the Peter Eaton separately. Neither had much use at all because I then damaged my tooth! Both the B&H and the Pillinger mouthpieces are in lovely condition and have been sterilised ( but I'd recommend that you do this again for peace of mind). I spent long phone calls discussing which mouthpiece would be most appropriate with both Ed Pillinger and Peter Eaton and I tried several before making a decision - so the Pillinger goes very well with this clarinet - in my opinion..... but it's very much a personal choice. If you don't like it, it would sell easily I think. There are LOTS of options to choose from though and both makers are very patient and helpful. Not cheap options at £160 & £300 but they really make a difference. Don't try mouthpieces that aren't for a wide-bore clarinet if you are new to the 1010 as they will play out of tune.

http://www.eatonclarinets.com/The case was, I think, the original case & is in very nice condition with just a couple of scuffs on the front corners. There's no key but all the fixings work as they should. It's a double case which at first I found annoying but over time came to rather like as I could get all the accessories in! I include them all..............A silk pull-through, a clarinet stand, the original metal ligature and cap, and a Rovner ligature & cap, cork grease and cigarette papers! I'll also include 2 mouthpiece patches. and of course, the mouthpieces! I'll also include a couple of new reeds of hopefully, appropriate strength!I'll include new mouthpeice patches and a couple of (I hope) appropriate strength reeds.
*** Come and inspect & try the clarinet - it lives in a lovely part of Wales! ( SA9, 15mins N of M4 at Swansea...... 35mins from the Gower, 10 mins from the Brecon Beacons.... nice!!!) and collection is also fine with cash payment on collection & Paypal deposit of £100 at the end of the auction. ***

***I'll send this well packed and fully insured by Parcelforce 48 if you are unable to collect it.***
