For a guitar that can do a little bit of everything, look no further than the G&L HSS. It's the hot setup for those who like vintage single coil tones but also need a guitar that can really rock out. This fully loaded custom example sports a flame maple top and quarter sawn neck that makes it especially responsive and dynamic.

This particularly deluxe version also features a flame maple top and scraped wood binding. Besides looking great, the flame maple top is an age-old technique to add a little top end attack and response. It's got both looks and personality.In addition this guitar sports an optional quarter sawn maple neck. This refers to how the wood is cut, and the grain orientation runs perpendicular to the fretboard. If you can imagine how easy it is to bend a popsicle stick in the flat orientation, versus when it's on edge, this will give you an idea how the quarter sawn neck adds stiffness. There is less quarter sawn wood "per tree" and this explains why it is an upgrade or only used on higher end guitars. The additional neck stiffness also improves the response and attack, giving the guitar a little more "pop" and clarity. If you live in a area with wide climate swings, you can also expect fewer periodic neck adjustments.Put this all together, and this Legacy HSS has great clarity and attack without sounding overly bright or sacrificing complexity. The G&L-made Alnico neck and middle pickups have enough output to sound full and meaty, but still retain enough glassy qualities to satisfy purists. The neck+middle combination has the familiar quacky blues tones, but seemingly more bite and less murkiness. We can't be sure, but we'll chalk that up to the maple top and quarter sawn neck combination. These pickups will drive pedals pretty well and have enough midrange content not to get too icy when the Loud Button is pushed.The G&L-made AW4470 pickup is G&L's answer to the Duncan JB pickup. Using an Alnico magnet with the 7000 turns of 44-gage wire (hence AW4470) the specifications are very similar to the venerable JB. And so is the tone: There is plenty of wound string attack, a fat midrange peak, and bright treble response. It's the quintessential rock and roll pickup, and is guaranteed to goose your drive pedal or amplifier into action. When played clean the tones can be a little dark for crisp rhythm playing, and the coil split switch relieves the midrange heft and produces a cleaner, leaner personality. It also bears mentioning that the G&L passive treble and bass controls have great tone shaping capability, especially as applied to the bridge pickup. The ability to roll off both bass and treble response is a unique feature, and rolling low end off the humbucker not only changes its clean tone, but also how it drives pedals. Effect pedals -- especially distortion -- are very midrange sensitive, and the passive bass and treble controls provide a lot of flexibility. The Modern Classic neck is 1-11/16" width version of their Slim C profile and is very similar to a typical American Fender® neck. The string spacing is the same as their 1-5/8" nut width, and this creates more room on the sides of the fretboard, alleviating any concern of string roll-off. The new radius is a bit rounder as well, changing from 12" to 9.5". We don't notice a huge difference in the way single notes feel but doing chord work on the higher frets is easier. The thinner taper up the neck is also shred-friendly, and the nominal dimensions measure .820 at the first fret and .870 at the twelfth. The cosmetics, workmanship and tonal flexibility of this guitar check off a lot of boxes. And many guitars with this level of features often MAP at close to three grand.
