Using Carefully Selected Curly Koa and Curly Mango
Among other materials, we use carefully chosen curly koa wood with patterns of dizzying beauty for the body of Oihata ukuleles.
Don't Hawaiian brands have a hard time getting koa wood supplies for their latest ukuleles? Yes, that's why they're usually made of whitish, lightweight koa.
Even though they produce a light, sweet sound, it feels a little bit different from the original koa.
With different hues of deep reddish brown, the so-called Big Island koa is heavy and solid (independently of whether it was grown in Hawaii) and has a beautiful sound and color pattern, setting the quality standard for ukulele wood supply. Because obtaining such good koa has become more difficult lately, it requires daily hard work.
In addition, while curly koa custom models from Hawaiian brands usually feature different patterns at the front and back, Oihata ukuleles use the same type of wood, with all the timber cut from the same location.
Before it's ready to be used, the wood is seasoned 20 years in Hawaii and then left to rest at least an addition year in Japan for it to adapt to the new climate (the Japanese four seasons).
