1855 Adolphe Sax baritone saxophone. Here is an extraordinarily rare Adolphe Sax baritone saxophone, made just 10 years after the saxophone was patented. This is the early large bell version of the Adolphe Sax baritone saxophone, which was produced for just a short time before the design switched to a smaller bell. This saxophone just received a complete overhaul and restoration from our repairman who also repairs saxophones for the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. He owns several Adolphe Sax saxophones himself, so he has a great appreciation for these horns. His work found a perfect balance between restoration and preservation. The Adolphe Sax bell stamp is still incredibly clear after all of these years, and most of the saxophone, as it was originally built, is still intact. The repair work is unobtrusive and will give this horn many more decades (or centuries) of play. This sax comes in a modern hard case, which has been modified to fit this saxophone. This instrument has a beautiful, lyric quality to its sound. It's much more delicate and supple than a modern baritone, and plays very well in tune with itself. The overall pitch center is higher than our modern standard, which is quite common with instruments of this era. The range is from low B to high Eb (although the instrument's design makes the lowest couple of notes difficult to center). This is a saxophone that could be performed tonight in a concert, or grace the halls of a museum for ages.
